Now the Spartan from Arrowverse is DC Comicscanon
The CW show Arrow launched the Arrowverse, a brand-new TV rendition of the DC Universe in 2012. The show was well-known for its original characters even if it included a few noteworthy DC canon characters like Green Arrow and Deathstroke. Among these were John Diggle, Oliver Queen's confidante and bodyguard. Diggle, an ex-military man, became a key player of Team Arrow and helped Green Arrow through many of his exploits. Diggle finally acquired both in season 4 with the arrival of his Spartan identity following many seasons devoid of a codename or outfit.
John Diggle's inclusion into the DC Universe is hardly novel given he has been present since the New 52. He neither had a costume like his Arrowverse counterpart nor was known as Spartan, though. But this fixes that and at last names his codename as canonized. Though John isn't identified as Spartan, the book on his armor looks to be codename shorthand. 07-19 also looks to be a sly allusion to Arrow's seventh season's fourth episode: "Spartan". Though minor, it's at last brought a fan-favorite Arrowverse character into appropriate DC canon.
Green Arrow formally names a Shock Arrowverse Hero in Official DC Lore.
Alert! Ahead for Green Arrow #12 are spoilers! One of Green Arrow's closest Arrowverse friends has been DC Universe canonized. Oliver Queen is fighting his life against Merlyn after months of hunting down his most despised foe. But the Emerald Archer comes upon another unexpected blast from the past that renders DC Comics canon guaranteed.
Finally confronting Merlyn, Green Arrow #12 by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaaske, Phil Hester, and Eric Gapstur is Merlyn's use of the Sanctuary archives to create hard-light constructions of Oliver's friends and family overwhelms Green Arrow, nevertheless. After the actual Team Arrow shows up to destroy the constructions, Green Arrow fortunately gains the upper hand. Oliver beats Merlyn and brings him to John Diggle, an old buddy of Green Arrow. Now sporting an armor reading "SPTN 07-19," Diggle bids Oliver and his family well before sending Merlyn to the correct authorities.
The Story of Spartan Might Still Play in the DC Universe
For Arrowverse viewers, the linked world has sadly closed and Diggle has not been seen since. Although this is a new form of Spartan, viewers who appreciated John's courageous character grew over Arrow's lifetime can reset simple knowledge he is a part of the DC Universe. Though John Diggle's destiny is yet unknown, the current Green Arrow run has given him some much-needed growth by at last rendering his Arrowverse codename canonical.
