Is This The "Cold Blood" of Doctor Who Spinoffs?
You know those classic stories in Doctor Who where humans and a big scary reptile race have a serious problem? Yeah, like the ones with the Silurians who have to be careful when digging under the ground. Or the ones where those Sea Devils get mad about how humans mess with the environment. Those awesome "Cold Blood" storylines might be coming back... kind of! But on a much grander scale.
Imagine that classic episode but on steroids, a whole series just focused on the problems humans cause, how the ocean's getting messed up, and why everyone needs to start thinking twice before they use all the water, or start a war on a really pissed-off lizard people! This is the vibe for The War Between The Land and The Sea, which was announced in 2024 with two great stars: Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw!
The Doctor Who Universe Is Expanding Beyond Earth
The War Between The Land and The Sea looks to be kind of a big deal for the Doctor Who franchise. Now we have a whole TV show exploring one story in a very focused way – you know, a real chance to develop everything, the history, the characters, and why those Sea Devils are really mad. Think of it as if that “Cold Blood" two-parter was given a series, it's almost as if Doctor Who fans are about to get a bunch of new information to enjoy.
The show is coming out this year, which might mean we will finally get to see more of Kate Stewart! (Remember that woman from UNIT? She’s like the top brass for those humans trying to make contact with aliens. The lady seems to be a favorite in the fan world. ). And since it seems like the show's creators are going back to that Matt Smith-era, well... maybe some classic monsters might reappear too? Just a thought!
More Than a Rerun of Old Stories: "Cold Blood" and Its Legacy
You already know those stories are about how humans mess up the environment, those Silurians and Sea Devils have some super tough problems! This show has the chance to bring out those ideas. Think of a big message, the Earth is in peril and how our species isn't always thinking of the long-term ramifications of our actions. The creators could really drive that point home and remind us why this kind of "War Between The Land and The Sea" is so critical.
Now, remember when the Doctor went up against the Silurians back in the "Cold Blood" episode? It was great. We were just at the start of those kinds of alien conflicts with the show, you know, those species sharing the Earth and all that. That was the original “Cold Blood”. It was good, but The War Between The Land and The Sea gives us a chance to dive deeper. Let’s hope they manage to pull off that "climate change message", and it might not just be another alien versus human showdown, we could be looking at the Doctor Who world's biggest exploration of climate change to date.
A World Under the Sea: Silurians and Sea Devils
Get ready to see those Sea Devils again – those lizard-type alien creatures. They’re super creepy, really mad, and probably the ones doing all the major "fighting back" stuff against the humans who're polluting the ocean. But maybe we could see more of the Silurians. They’re kind of the same thing as Sea Devils – sort of. You’re thinking: “Why bother bringing the Silurians back?”
If The War Between The Land and The Sea goes as planned, the Silurians and Sea Devils would be the coolest kind of "inter-species rivalry" and it’ll be like a huge family fight where everyone's super angry. Think about how awesome that would be: "We need to live! The oceans are our home! You guys ruined it!" If they really take the chance to do the "War" properly and include a message about Earth’s environment, this show has some real potential, making it the kind of thing Doctor Who fans just can’t miss. It’s a big part of that world-building, as well as the “Cold Blood” history of the show. That Christmas Special might even have a hint about it!
Doctor Who, Christmas and a New Kind of World
“Cold Blood" had a crazy ending where the Silurians got put back into their icy sleep for a thousand years, and no one was left fighting for their planet. It worked then, but a whole TV series needs to be more satisfying, right? A full "resolution"? How will they solve the problem of “how do we deal with the humans when they mess up our home"? A show like The War Between The Land and The Sea can’t end with a simple solution like the “Cold Blood” ending. I’d say there are a few more episodes to show everyone why The Doctor has such a hard time talking sense into some of those big-time humans. Maybe that Christmas Special will be just what we need to really kick-off this series and maybe they will really drive those messages home.
Just imagine, everyone getting a bit more mindful of the Earth because of The War Between The Land and The Sea? Maybe there's hope. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. We’ll be seeing what happens with the whole The War Between The Land and The Sea – and what we’ll do with those angry creatures - come 2024.
