Time loop movies are all the rage, but Boss Level, directed by Joe Carnahan, is one of those films that had a truly unique, albeit complicated ending!
The Premise of Boss Level:
The movie stars Frank Grillo as Roy Pulver, a former special forces soldier, and his journey into the unknown as the movie starts out with a job interview with his ex-wife, Jemma (Naomi Watts), at a company called Dynow Labs.
However, Roy quickly gets thrown into an unpredictable and incredibly difficult situation, he gets stuck in a time loop, one where he has to live the same day over and over!
And that's not all, there are assassins everywhere out to get him.
The Time Loop Explained:
The whole movie revolves around this unique, and frankly crazy premise of living in a time loop, meaning he dies, only to get restarted back at 7:00 AM every single time. Each day follows exactly the same path and all ends at 12:47 PM.
Roy is determined to break this loop! So each death that Roy experiences helps him learn about how this time loop really started! That's also where we begin to see just how cunning and clever he is!
Jemma's Role and The Osiris Spindle:
Jemma invited Roy for the interview! A way to have an excuse for the next big element: Jemma needed a sample of his hair and blood! That's the start of some epic events that include the creation of this incredible device called The Osiris Spindle.
That is where everything gets even more twisted, and takes audiences into something new! That is The Osiris Spindle lets users go back in time. This was a very big tool for the company that employs her but Jemma's boss Colonel Clive Ventor (Mel Gibson) made this happen! But what he's planning to do was super dangerous. Jemma wants to make sure that Ventor's actions won't result in something super horrific.
This plan means stopping his evil actions which might save everyone on Earth.
- Jemma had this special plan, putting Roy's hair and blood samples into The Osiris Spindle and activates it!
- This makes Roy go into this unending loop.
Confronting Ventor:
The movie continues with this super intense and dramatic moment when Roy confronts Ventor! It all leads up to what viewers could have thought is an ending! Ventor gets everything he's always wanted. In a dark, truly wicked turn Ventor admits his own wrongdoings which help explain just what Roy's fate really is!
- Jemma was killed! And this was by Ventor!
- Ventor had the terrible plan of killing Roy's son!
- Ventor confesses how incredibly dangerous this machine is!
But Roy makes an impressive effort and wins but it is bittersweet as this does not ultimately change events as The Osiris Spindle ends up exploding and it seemed that the entire Earth had perished.
Roy's Choice and The Resolution:
Roy, at this moment has another one of his resets in the time loop. What becomes obvious at this point is that even if he succeeds! There's no winning in this scenario. That's a point that takes him to have an incredible moment! In these daily loops, even with death as the consequence, Roy makes the time that is left mean something. That means being able to connect with his son Joe.
Another super moving element came out and he learned something pretty essential, which is the idea that the phone call from Jemma came in the morning!
- This means Ventor had lied!
- Roy discovered he might have 14 minutes to change history and potentially save the day and Jemma.
- He made it work and saves the day! Although he nearly perished! In an amazing event! He comes back as himself!
The time loop ended once he managed to find a way into The Osiris Spindle!, a moment where the viewers don't know what happened! But Carnahan did make it clear! That he is confident he's going to save the day!
The Meaning of Boss Level:
There was something special for viewers that showed this wasn't your typical time-loop action flick and may have hit some real hard moments. Boss Level is all about facing up to challenges.
- There's this emotional connection about love and his life and the meaning he wants to make.
- The plot touches on grief, purpose and having things mean something!
- This means that time that might seem to not have an impact! Could become precious for a whole different reason, especially with life itself as the cost!
Boss Level brings to life just how important relationships can really be! Grillo did an exceptional job playing Roy. A role which really showed viewers what a truly gifted actor is and really pushed him to new levels and he and Mel Gibson as Ventor provided fantastic performances which helps make it such an unforgettable time! It even appears critics love this time-loop drama as it did really well with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes at around 77%!
