Young Sherlock books by author Andy Lane provide the basis of the forthcoming Prime Video version. Eight overall, with the most recent arriving in 2015, the show promises to be an action-packed origin tale of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective. It portrays Sherlock as disgraced and unformed at the age of 19. It is at Oxford University that he then finds himself pulled to a murder mystery. The enigma finally compromises his freedom, sparking a scheme that alters Sherlock's life irreversibly.
Showrunner and writer will be Matthew Parkhill. He will executive produce with Ritchie and Lane as well. Previous credits for Parkhill include the crime drama Rogue and the action-thriller Deep State, starring Walton Goggins. Though the storyline of Young Sherlock is unknown, Ritchie vowed in a statement that it will recreate the cherished fictional character. He remarked in part: "We're going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they've never imagined before."
Guy Ritchie will be directing the newly hired Young Sherlock Holmes actor. Attempts to see the Sherlock world of characters from fresh angles have emerged over the last few years. That covers Netflix's Enola Holmes as well as the forthcoming CBS later this year medical drama Watson. Additionally on Netflix, there was the fleeting The Irregulars, which examined a gang of teenagers working for Holmes and Watson.
Variety reports that Ritchie will oversee a youthful Sherlock Holmes series starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Designed for Prime Video and including eight episodes, Young Sherlock Holmes is based on the same-named books. For Ritchie and Tiffin, who recently collaborated on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, it represents a reunion. For Ritchie, it's also the latest Sherlock endeavor since he oversaw the two films featuring Robert Downey Jr. as the renowned investigator.
Though most famously recognized as Hardin Scott in the After series, Tiffin has had other noteworthy roles. He played youthful Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. With Young Sherlock Holmes and his Ritchie reunion, however, the 26-year-old actor might have an opportunity to define a character without referencing the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.
