Has M. Night Shyamalan's "Trap" Twist Already Made Public?
Known for his mind-bending turns, M. Night Shyamalan's forthcoming movie "Trap" is not an exception. Believing he is the serial killer "The Butcher," Cooper, the father in the movie takes his daughter Riley to a concert only to find the police have set a trap for him. Though ideas about the twist have been abound among fans, the release of the second trailer seems to have disproved two of the most often used ones.
Riley: Vampire or Informant?
Two well-known theories postulated Riley was either Cooper's informant or a vampire. The vampire idea fit Shyamalan's inclination for supernatural ideas. According to the informant theory, Riley was giving Cooper information to enable his crime-commissioning. The second trailer seems to rule out both options, though.
Riley's Innocence Revealed in the Second Trailer
Riley appears to be unaware of the tension between her father and the police in the new footage, hence blind to the drama playing out at the concert. She even highlights her innocence by panics at one point. This implies Riley is not engaged in "The Butcher" either as an informant or a vampire.
Whose Real Twist Might Be?
Although some viewers may find the debunking of these ideas unsatisfactory, it does not lessens the buzz about the movie. Still many more possible turns to take into account.
One intriguing idea holds that "Trap" follows "The Sixth Sense," Shyamalan's first major hit. According to this view, a ghost assisting the authorities with the trap is among "The Butcher's" victims. Another hypothesis holds that the man Cooper's video seems to be a victim might be the actual killer.
Some theories also center Riley's mother, implying she might be either an accomplice or the real killer. Cooper could also be setting the trap himself or there might not be any twist at all. But Shyamalan's record points to more surprises to come.
Is the trailer a Red Herring?
The second trailer might be a red herring meant to fool viewers. Riley might still be a contender for the twist; her apparently innocent manner is a front. Riley loves, Lady Raven, might also be part of the mystery. She might be "The Butcher," killing people between songs, or maybe she set up the trap personally.
Anticipate the Surprising
Whatever the twist turns out to be, it will surely be startling. The surprising turns of Shyamalan's films are well-known, thus "Trap" looks to be nothing different. Although the vampire and informant hypotheses have been disproved, the nature of the trap and the actual killer remain unknown.
