Haymitch's The Hunger Games Prequel Movie can formally introduce Katniss's dad.
It seems rather reasonable that The Hunger Games may properly introduce Katniss Everdeen's father for the first time. According to the original film and novel, her father died in a mining explosion when she was eleven years old, therefore Mr. Everdeen was only seen in pictures and fleeting, silent flashbacks to the deadly tragedy. The film will take place eight years before Katniss is born, as Katniss is sixteen in the first Hunger Games and Haymitch's Prequel film is set 24 years earlier. Katniss's parents are thus still relatively young in the next prequel and might even connect with young Haymitch.
Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy in Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, The Hunger Games, and Catching Fire. Another riddle never solved in the original book trilogy and later films was the father of Katniss and Primrose Everdeen. Should a juvenile version of Katniss's father show up in Haymitch's eagerly awaited Hunger Games Prequel, the franchise can at last address what his name is, which would very well have botanical roots given Katniss and Prim's names. Given Haymitch's prequel occurs 24 years before The Hunger Games, it's also likely that the next film will highlight Katniss's Everdeen side grandparents and any uncles or aunts she might have had.
How Soon Before Dad Died for the Original Hunger Games Movie?
Katniss's dad passed five years before The Hunger Games' original film; it was discovered he was killed when she was just eleven years old. Thus, the dad of Katniss and Prim does not die until almost 19 years after Haymitch finishes the 50th Hunger Games. Haymitch and Mr. Everdeen spent 19 years in the same District 12 as they lived there all their lives. Given Haymitch's path in District 12 both before and after winning the Second Quarter Quell, Katniss's dad might thus play a supporting part in Sunrise on the Reaping.
Given the chronology of the Hunger Games' forthcoming prequel, Katniss's parents are not much older than Haymitch, hence it is most likely that they either stumbled across each other when Haymitch returned to District 12 or knew each other already. Haymitch would at least know about Katniss' father since it is believed that he was already acquainted with her mother when Katniss participated in The Hunger Games' main series. In the Hunger Games series, District 12 is said to be a very tiny town, hence even if they were not "friends," it is difficult to imagine Haymitch not having at least occasional contacts with the Everdeens. Haymitch may have even attended school with Katniss' father before the horrific Second Quarter Quell since he was just sixteen years old when he was selected for the 50th Hunger Games. In the first Hunger Games film, Haymitch is 40 years old; Katniss's mother is presumably just 41 years old given she was around 17 during the 50th Quarter Quell. It's difficult to imagine that younger iterations of Katniss's father and mother wouldn't show up talking with teenage Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping as Haymitch and Katniss's father grew up in the Seam together as well.
After 12 years, the New Hunger Games Prequel Movie introduces a huge district 12 character at last.
The Hunter Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the recently revealed series prequel film, offers a formal introduction to a District 12 character crucial to the narrative of Katniss Everdeen. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the franchise is growing as it examines another deadly Hunger Games long before Katniss and Peeta's time following the popularity of the original Hunger Games film and their 2023 prequel. Following a film adaptation in 2026, Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate said on June 6 that The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping novel will be published in 2025.
The prequel will thus follow the Second Quarter Quell/50th Hunger Games since Sunrise on the Reaping starts 24 years before the original Hunger Games movie. This selected Hunger Games is not random since District 12 tribute won the fatal event and subsequently mentor Haymitch Abernathy won as well. Haymitch's prequel shows the fourth and final Games won by a District 12 tribute following Lucy Gray Baird's 10th Hunger Games and Katniss and Peeta's 74th and 75th Hunger Games. As such, it could be the last time the series offers a close-up view of District 12 at another junctur in Panem's history.
Parents of Katniss most likely had names in the Reaping during Haymitch's Hunger Games.
The reaping in District 12 is the one sequence Sunrise on the Reaping may reasonably predict before the 50th Hunger Games starts. Haymitch's name was already there many times as he was just sixteen when his name was called. Although the exact birth dates of Katniss's mother and father are unknown, Mrs. Everdeen was reportedly around 17 years old when her best friend Maysilee Donner was reaped alongside Haymitch Abernathy for the 50th Hunger Games – hence she will be at the reaping in the new prequel. Although Katniss's mother most surely had her name in the bowl a few times, if her father was similarly approximately 17 or 18 years old during the Second Quarter Quell, it's also likely. Although Katniss's mother most surely had her name in the bowl a few times, it's also likely that her father did if he were also about 17 or 18 years old during the Second Quarter Quell. Haymitch's prequel's reaping would thus be a more subdued approach for introducing Katniss's young mother and father. Whether Haymitch arrives at the reaping with Katniss's father or ends up standing beside him, this would be a symbolic means of tying the terrible symmetry of Haymitch and the Everdeen family's stories long before Katniss offers her tribute.

Haymitch's Prequel Movie Can Solve Another Big Everdeen Family Mystery
Not only does Sunrise on the Reaping’s timeline allow for characters from the original movie series to appear as younger versions of themselves, but it also makes room for figures from The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes to appear as older versions. While Lucy Gray disappeared in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ ending, there are plenty of theories that she survived and kept in contact with those in the Covey who remained in District 12. Furthermore, there are even theories that Katniss Everdeen descends from the Covey, specifically that the mother of Katniss’ father could be Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray’s cousin.
Haymitch’s Hunger Games prequel will take place about 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, so Lucy Gray will be 56 while Maude Ivory will be around 48–49 years old. The timeline certainly fits for Maude Ivory to potentially be Katniss Everdeen’s grandmother, so The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will hopefully give a more solid answer regarding Katniss’ potential familial link to the Covey. It’s unlikely that Lucy Gray Baird will return given her uncertain fate in the franchise, but the success of the 2023 prequel film indicates Haymitch’s story will at least include some references to the Covey in District 12.
The Hunger Games is a multi-movie franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. The films are based on the young adult dystopian book series by author Suzanne Collins. The first film was released in 2012, followed by Catching Fire in 2013, Mockingjay Part 1 in 2014, and Mockingjay Part 2 in 2015. In 2023, the fifth film in the series was released, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
