Cast Delivers Tense Group Dynamics for What You Wish For
With staging and photography that brilliantly portrays the private residence as well as the city, What You Wish For transports us into the lovely backdrop of an unidentified South American nation. Ryan drops some not-so- subtle signals that he is seeking for a job and Jack expresses his own problems, which obviously irritates Ryan, even if he keeps a front of politeness. The first twenty or so minutes are a striking picture of professional envy. Alice (Penelope Mitchell), a solitary visitor brought home by the two men for a cookery competition Ryan wins, sleeps with Jack.
Anyone who has felt such jealousy will find great and agonizing resonance in the relationships among these three players. But once Jack is gone from the picture, the tension in What You Wish For does not relax. Ryan returns to the home to meet Poised hostess Imogen (Tamsin Topolski) and flexible security and muscle Maurice (Juan Carlos Messier), two additional hospitality experts employed for Jack's enigmatic company. Ryan continues to pass for Jack as Imogen describes the dinner for five extremely wealthy visitors they are hosting—with a macabre twist.
What You Want Not Quite Land On Its Final Point
Though What You Wish For can be applauded for its concept, which stresses both the harshness of the rich and the mental strain and moral degradation of those who rise to work for them, Mark Mylod's The Menu clearly shares many characteristics. Imogen's excuses and the total lack of shame among the dinner guests are quite morbidly interesting. What You Wish For is an interesting psychological horror placed against the sleek environment and flawless professionals (or those striving to seem such) to create a twisted narrative.
Not everyone will accumulate large debt from gambling and wish for a successful profession for themselves; this narrative hole does not really fit. The menu suggests that "Chef" may have been happy running a mildly successful burger shop with a homy. For a much darker finish, What You Wish For concludes that the upper class is horrible and there is no way out for the people who work for them. Though this ending left me with many more questions, which could have been the intention, it does not produce the most fulfilling film.
What You Want: An All Around View
Though the overarching moral of the novel falls short of perfect, Nicholas Tomnay's Thriller from which one cannot turn away is gripping. Ryan (Nick Stahl) is a down-on- his- luck chef who to South America to see his former roommate Jack ( Brian Groh) and flee threats resulting from his gambling debts. Jack, Ryan hasn't seen in ten years, has everything he could ever want. But things take a sinister turn when Jack passes away and Ryan takes Jack's identity only to find a terrible reality about Jack's accomplished career.
Viewers of the Thriller genre will find great attraction in the fairly interesting show. After viewers view the ending, it is unclear though how the show will be able to draw in them. The show does not provide solutions to many of the many questions one has.
Ryan's Story
Ryan falls in a morally dubious realm of self-perseveration and a guilty conscience, so he is by no means a likeable protagonist. He falls into the job of chef with an awkward but clear simplicity once the actual cooking gets underway. The unsettling setting of What You Wish For hooks us, and Topolski's portrayal is incisive as she badgers Ryan to "get [his] s**t together," the prospect of death and dismemberment hovering.
Watching the show will make you wonder about its ending. The show might leave you feeling conflicted; that would be the intentions of the creators.
