If anything, the creators at Nintendo and Illumination were smart to keep Peach's Super Mario Bros. Movie roots under wraps. The film teases a wholly original tale behind Peach's debut in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of following her past in flashback fashion. Although some long-time Nintendo enthusiasts objected to the movie's source material, it is indisputable that the unique narrative and canon of The Super Mario Bros. Movie leaves plenty of doors — or green pipes — open for next sequels and Spinoffs. Mario's backstory is now known, hence Peach's should take front stage.
Mario says in the movie that he entered a weird green pipe and unintentionally landed in the Mushroom Kingdom. Beyond happy to see another human, Princess Peach tells her story: She too arrived via Warp Tube, albeit at that time she was an infant. Peach doesn't divulges any further information, and considering her then-age, it's likely she remembers not much else. But considering the circumstances of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario's path seems only reasonable in pushing Peach to explore her own pre-Mushroom Kingdom past.
The way The Super Mario Bros. Movie reverses the screenplay of the video game series is among its best features. Princess Peach teaches Mario the ins-and-outs of wielding Fire Flower powers, dodging Piranha Plants, and shattering brick blocks, not as a one-dimensional damsel in distress. Peach is the more seasoned Mushroom Kingdom hero with amazing martial arts, parkour, and motorbike-riding ability. That aside, Peach's origin story feels like the next obvious narrative move for the franchise and can give even more nuance to an already-interesting character.

Though the movie proves Peach arrived from another world to the Mushroom Kingdom, fan theories abound on whether that world is the same as Mario and Luigi's native one.
Mario's producer Shigeru Miyamoto expressed interest in furthering Princess Peach's character development and position. While Nintendo has kept Peach's more conventional role in most of its video game releases, Miyamoto used The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a means of producing a more empowered, dynamic version of Peach (via Variety). Princess Peach is believed to be the daughter of King Toadstool in the first-ever Super Mario Bros.' game manual. The Super Mario Bros. Movie series can provide Peach an own history as Nintendo doesn't appear very outspoken about the relationship.
