Red Hammer the Deviser: Baldur's Gate 3's morally gray character
Complex in Baldur's Gate 3 Redhammer the Deviser is a Dwarf tinkerer and submersible pilot from the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. He transports inmates to the undersea torture chamber and jail, Lord Enver Gortash's Iron Throne. Redhammer is a ready tool in Gortash's plans since his motivations combine fear with greed. His acts have resulted in the unintentional death of a Waveservant of Umberlee; currently, the Waveservants are seeking retribution.
A Choice: Mercy or Justice
Baldur's Gate 3's players must make a tough choice about Red Hammer's fate. Though he is not a good man, he can be convinced to assist the player characters in rescuing Iron Throne hostages. His moral uncertainty is especially more evident from his personal notes, which imply he is looking for a way out of his servitude to Gortash.
Players can fool Redhammer or persuade him to help them free the hostages. Should the player characters be aware of the Waveservantes' search for Red Hammer's death, their promise of protection will persuade him to help them. Along with the player characters, Redhammer's actions finally help several hostages—including the Mind Flayer, Omeluum, Duke Ravengard—to be rescued.
Demands from Umberlee: A Selection of Goods and Effects
The Waveservants of Umberlee confront the players upon resurfacing and demand Red Hammer's submission. In exchange for the Wavemother's Robe, a potent garment that grants many boons, players can opt to betray Redhammer and deliver him up to the Waveservates. This decision may go against a prior pledge given to Redhammer and maybe sour ties with friends.
Safeguarding Red Hammer: A Moral and Reward Campaign
Players can alternatively fight the Waveservantes to shield Red Hammer from Umberlee's fury. This results in a difficult fight, but triumph brings a gold reward from Red Hammer and the Wavemother's Sickle—a weapon taken from one of the dead Waveservatives. This decision also offers the secret to a top security vault at the Counting House's bottom.
In the end, it is morally dubious whether one should support Red Hammer or the Waveservants. Both decisions include benefits and drawbacks; the player has to choose which they believe to be the correct line of action.
