Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Changes Everything About Morgott and Mohg
Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree tells a new story about the Lands Between, focusing on Miquella, but it also digs deeper into the lore of two of Marika's children: Morgott and Mohg. The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion changes how players see these two important bosses from the base game.
The Hornsent: A Lost Civilization
In Shadow Of The Erdtree, players meet the Hornsent, a civilization that once thrived in Belurat, Tower Settlement. They revere horns as a sign of divinity, similar to those seen on the Omen twins, Morgott and Mohg. The Hornsent believe these horns are a sign of proximity to the Crucible, a divine entity that predates the Erdtree.
Morgott and Mohg are not Hornsent, but they are classified as "Omen" because of their horns. The Hornsent were once the dominant force in the Land of Shadow before Marika's rise to godhood.
Marika's Revenge on the Hornsent
The Hornsent were purged by Messmer the Impaler, a loyal son of Marika, who was likely sent to the Land of Shadow because of the Abyssal Serpent within him. The Hornsent were targeted because they didn't inherit the light of Grace, but also for wrongs they committed against Marika and her people.
Marika was born in Shaman Village, in the Land of Shadow. The Hornsent took her people and subjected them to experiments. This is why Marika's "secret incantation" found in Shaman Village speaks of a village bathed in gold, but with "no one to heal."
The Crucible's Influence on the Omen Twins
The reason Omen are shunned under Marika's rule is because of their connection to the Crucible. While Godfrey, Marika's first Elden Lord consort, commanded the Crucible Knights, the Hornsent's actions against Marika's people likely led to the Omen being shunned.
Morgott's unwavering devotion to the Golden Order after the Shattering is remarkable, considering his past. Mohg, on the other hand, abandoned the power structures that oppressed him, seeking out the Formless Mother, an Outer God considered heretical under the Golden Order.
Shadow of the Erdtree changes how we see the Omen. Their horns are no longer just a curse, but a sign of their connection to the Crucible and the Hornsent's veneration for them. Marika's prejudice against the Hornsent likely fuels her hatred towards Morgott and Mohg.
