The hit game Diablo IV left players with a cliffhanger. Now, the expansion Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred is finally here!
The expansion picks up right where the main story ended. Players chase Neyrelle and the corrupted soulstone she carries into the dangerous jungles of Nahantu. Along the way, they team up with new allies like Eru, the Spirit of Akarat (in Golden Lion form), and the Pale Hand Mercenaries.
After a betrayal by Eru, players face the Harbinger of Hatred—Mephisto’s avatar—within Mephisto’s Domain. This epic battle is won with the help of Akarat's powerful spiritual energy. Akarat sacrifices himself to banish Mephisto's form. While victorious, it's a heartbreaking moment that leaves Neyrelle filled with grief and mourning the loss.
Throughout the game, Eru is a trusted ally, yet his ultimate goal was always to protect Nahantu at any cost. He makes a deal with Mephisto to achieve this goal, sacrificing everything else in a display of twisted loyalty.
Eru’s betrayal comes as a devastating but surprisingly believable plot point! In his repentance, he confesses his sins to the Spirits. His actions haunt him even after the battle as he seeks out Neyrelle and the player only to beg for death.
While the players fought Mephisto, Eru placed the soulstone within Akarat’s tomb. Then he rejoined Neyrelle and the player character, to meet his grim end. But it seems this is a long way from a definitive ending.
With Akarat's body holding the soulstone, Mephisto rises again, taking control of Akarat’s body, an esteemed figure of the Zakarum church! This terrifying scenario sets the stage for future Diablo IV content, opening multiple avenues.
While this conclusion brings powerful emotion it has more to tell. Future updates, and upcoming expansions, will need to continue exploring Mephisto’s rise in power, Akarat’s potential redemption and whether he will appear to bring good again!
