Why Is Godzilla Minus One in Black and White?
If you saw Godzilla Minus One - you probably saw the super dramatic, dark black and white version, and if you saw the color version of the movie - you might be surprised! The director, Takashi Yamazaki, says that there’s a real reason for that!
So What's the Big Deal?
- The 1954 version of Godzilla was originally made in black and white! This movie has a whole new twist. So the creators were trying to create something cool. It's kind of like a tribute.
- Yamazaki and his team put a lot of work into it - you know they didn’t just hit a "remove color" button! It's an art thing - the way they messed with the colors, made it like they created something from a black and white film, back in the day!
Does It Make a Difference?
- They thought this new black and white thing would really get viewers into the movie! It adds another layer of coolness!
- Think of it as making you feel more connected to the film. It seems like we are in the real world and Godzilla is truly alive! The film just feels darker. The director said it was "way scarier". Even the movie makers were freaking out.
Is This the First Black and White Godzilla?
- Nope, it's not! We had Godzilla/Gojira back in 1954. It's pretty interesting how Godzilla Minus One has paid a super cool tribute to those earlier days!
- Some of those early classic Godzilla movies are black and white! Back in the day, that was kind of the trend in movies, so, the original Godzilla didn’t even get color back in the 1950s. This new version really pays homage to what those directors did back then, since the later Godzilla movies just weren't quite as impressive.
Did They Try This Before?
Yep, they've got the whole black-and-white version. The Mist, from Stephen King. Remember, those original movies! This film has been made black and white for home viewing because those black-and-white visuals made the movie scarier and kind of had a whole vibe going.
Anything else that has had a "minus" edition?
- Well, there's this crazy action movie - Mad Max: Fury Road - Black & Chrome - with even a different name to highlight that this is not just color but actually a special edition.
- You'll find a lot of these black and white films, like those from Stephen King movies that people are really interested in, too!
- There was even that Wolverine movie - Logan Noir. People have tried the black and white look, to give it a really different look - which seems to have a place in film history! This style was a kind of tribute. And Yamazaki wanted the same vibe for this new version of the Godzilla franchise - which looks like it’ll have a whole new story!
"Godzilla Minus One" looks amazing - It is just the most beautiful thing - whether it’s black and white or color, they are both amazing. You’ve got a classic story in a new format! And just maybe you’ll end up liking the black and white even more - that's a trend I can totally get behind!
