Matt Smith remembers his confusion filming sequences with Arnold Schwarzenegger for *Terminator Genisys*. 2015 saw the release of the fifth *Terminator* franchise film. Alan Taylor was its director. Returning to play the venerable T-800 was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although critics gave the movie mostly poor ratings, it was a box office hit. Smith was a sophisticated T-5000 Terminator named Alex, effectively the incarnation of Skynet, in the *Terminator Genisys* ensemble. Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney were among the ensemble as well.
Smith remembers his time spent as a T-5000 in *Terminator Genisys* in a new *Variety* video. He is assigned in the video to find lines from different projects in his filmography. He laughs at a slightly perplexing movie-making experience. It included Schwarzenegger sporting green spandex pants. Though you can read it below, Smith's complete response shows up at 8:10 in the video above.
Though the Franchise has surely gone worse since this iconic 1991 film, James Cameron's *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* is generally regarded as one of the best sequel ever produced. *Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine* was clearly a step down; neither *Terminator Salvation* nor *Genisys* were popular. With a poor 26%, *Terminator Genisys* is actually the worst-reviewed movie of the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes.
"My very short stay in that universe. You know, it was very odd when I was filming. Like my first day with Arnold Schwarzenegger, he was in just a top half and green spandex, akin to green screen trousers. "What the f--k is going on, man?" I asked. I'm a computer playing who... It seemed extremely odd."
While the 2015 movie might have been a bust at the box office, it was not a bomb review-wise. *Terminator Salvation* underperformed financially in 2009 on a $200 million budget with a box office gross of $371.4 million worldwide. With a $155 million budget and $440.6 million earned, *Genisys* showed a notable increase. Though it was an economic triumph, the quality of the movie might have hampered what followed.
Released in 2019, Dark Fate brought back Schwarzenegger together with other original star Linda Hamilton. With both reviewers and viewers faring far better, the movie was a severe letdown, barely making $261.1 million globally. Audiences clearly burned out on the Franchise, and *Terminator Genisys* most surely had a part in this. For Smith, the film looks to have been an intriguing filmmaking experience at least otherwise.

Dark Fate, 2019 | 70% | 82% | terminator: dark fate
2015 terminator genisys | 26% | 52%
Terminator Salvation (2009) | 33% | 53%
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines 2003 | 70% | 46%
1991's *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* | 91% | 95%

Reversing the events of the original film, Genysis reboots James Cameron's *Terminator* series. Emilia Clarke's Sarah Connor already understands why Jai Courtney's Kyle Reese has been brought back in time; an elderly T-800, once played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, helps them in their aim to avert an AI revolt.
Though fans seem to have had enough of the series, *Terminator: Genysis* was supposed to revive the franchise and increase its popularity than before.
