Did the Walking Dead Creator Really Make a Mistake?
Even if you're a die-hard Walking Dead fan, it's super interesting that Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, has something he regrets about how he wrote Rick Grimes - the heart of The Walking Dead Comic.
How Did Rick Change in the Comic?
When Rick was first introduced in that super intense Comic - he had that awesome Southern Accent. You could imagine Rick was super rooted in those Southern values - those values about family and community. But, in the Comic, over time, Rick didn't sound so much like his Kentucky origins. It seemed a bit off to many fans. Kirkman said he totally took the blame, though,
What Exactly Did Robert Kirkman Regret?
- One Walking Dead fan said most of the characters all kind of sounded the same! This fan wanted you to know exactly who was talking, without seeing them. That made sense!
- It sounds like, Kirkman was kinda agreeing. He said Rick started off sounding very Southern - which would make sense with him living in Georgia - but as the series got more complex it kind of went away. He didn't write as many Southern quirks for Rick, but Kirkman realized he had made a mistake!
What Did the Fans Think?
- You have to agree: The show made Rick's Southern character even more believable, thanks to Andrew Lincoln! They said that most characters in The Walking Dead didn't really have distinct voices. It was pretty easy to imagine those characters' speech being kinda generic!
- It's kinda crazy when you think about it; even if the way they talked wasn’t really unique - the characters were super-unique. They did a great job on character development. There’s something to say for those deeper levels.
The "Walking Dead" Is Still Totally Amazing
The series got a bit more mature, so we don't necessarily see too many "Southern speech quirks", but we saw those really amazing details when we saw Rick Grimes's awesome family.
- It's all good - in the end, Rick Grimes' whole story - with all those Walking Dead characters - turned out pretty great, don't you think? And it's super wild because it's all based on the The Walking Dead Comic Book. Fans were super sad when The Walking Dead series wrapped up. We loved watching Rick Grimes grow!
- Kirkman, though, totally apologized for his misstep. You have to admire his honesty!
It just shows you, it doesn’t take a lot to make a character super likable! Even without a fancy accent. If you're a big Walking Dead fan - it's a super good reminder of the amazing storytelling in those Walking Dead comics and in the show, and maybe, it also tells us that there are tons of things that contribute to Character Development.
