Blades requires a new director.
Confirmed to be directing the film back in 2021, Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) quit Blade's production in September 2022 owing to ongoing production scheduling issues. Shortly after, Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country) took over as Director alongside Beau DeMayo (X-Men '97) to edit the script. Demange has now left, and a new writer has been brought in to leave a director-sized hole in their wake and the future of the movie apparently hanging in the air.
If Marvel decides to go with an accomplished action director of his kind, consider Chad Stahelski, the director of all four major John Wick films. He has before shown interest in overseeing a Blade film for the company, and his experience beginning as a stuntperson before moving into the director's chair has paid off with the John Wick series. Actually, those four films offer a wonderful road map for how this new Blade film can finally be successful.
Hey Marvel, Cut Messing Around and Just Give Blade to John Wick's Director.
Blade just lost another director, hence it seems appropriate for Marvel to at last assign the project to the filmmaker of the John Wick movies. Although Blade is scheduled for release in November 2025, its position in the MCU timeline seems uncertain given another creative upheaval under way. Marvel still has to choose the third director for the project, even while writer Eric Pearson keeps working on the most recent draft and his MCU background points to hopeful things.
Production problems have dogged Blade since it was first revealed in 2019. Since then, it has had two directors, several authors, and been postponed due to the over five-month writer's strike spanning the whole summer of 2023). Lead actor Mahershala Ali is still on board, but it is abundantly evident that the movie's path has not been easy. Therefore, it could be worth handing John Wick director Chad Stahelski more control if this road to completely pay off with the ideal Blade movie is to be fully realized.
Blade's Formula Should Mirror John Wick
Blade sounds like an easy idea to accomplish properly. Hunter of other vampires, it is about half human, half vampire. Having carried the idea successfully in 1998, the first Blade movie still stands today. A franchise like Chad Stahelski's John Wick has proved throughout four big hits, so the movie doesn't need to be especially convoluted to thrive. Blade could borrow a lot from what has become the John Wick franchise a modern classic of the action genre; it's all about running a basic premise almost flawlessly.
Highly stylized with violence and neon lighting enhanced by some of the best stunt work available, John Wick is One almost unbreakable guy against many has an interesting concept and ought to be the major emphasis of the next Blade movie. It may draw on the first John Wick film and be about Blade hunting down certain vampires for a particular purpose or flip the script as the other Wick series films ended up doing, where Blade ends up being the hunted.
Chad Stahelski worked with Marvel before.
Stahelski assisted in the two Captain America films he worked on feature some of the best action in the whole MCU and offer insightful knowledge working under the Marvel Studios juggernaut.
Having already worked on a number of MCU films, including Captain America: Civil War, where he was the second unit director following the success of the first John Wick film, Chad Stahelski already knows Marvel Studios. He performed stunt work for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 2 as well. Along with several Marvel movies outside the MCU, he worked on Spider-Man 2, The Wolverine, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Deadpool 2. Stahelski assisted in the two Captain America films he worked on feature some of the best action in the whole MCU and offer insightful knowledge working under the Marvel Studios juggernaut. This helps Stahelski's direction of one of these massive blockbusters stand out. His stunt work on several superhero productions over his career as well as his second unit directorial efforts on both Captain America: Civil War and DC's Birds of Prey film demonstrates he is more than fit for the larger realm of blockbuster superhero pictures.
