The Easy Way Out of Stopping a Superman-Level Conflict Is Kryptonite
Although Kryptonite will always have a role in Superman mythology, it is obvious that as the years pass, there is somewhat too much dependence on it. Kryptonite is always the end-all-be-all finale to most conflicts that Superman would readily triumph, regardless of who he faces. Though it's so often in his adventures that it can be a touch predictable when the green-glowing irradiated mineral is brought out, Superman has definitely battled back and triumphed against opponents with Kryptonite at times. The reason Kryptonite is such a bore in Superman stories is that it basically removes the most fascinating aspects of Superman's ability set.
One of the most famous tales in Man of Steel's history is The Death of Superman since Superman is seen on a level playing field with his adversary, engaged in a fight to the final end. While periodically confronting a struggle in the shape of Doomsday or other catastrophic dangers, fans love to see this amazing emblem of hope battle off foes effortlessly. Since Superman is represented on a level playing field with his antagonist, fighting to the bitter end, The Death of Superman is actually among the most famous tales in the Man of Steel's legacy. Eliminating this would be like Green Lantern losing his ring or the Joker tearing off Batman's utility belt right in middle of a battle. They still have training to match their enemies, but it totally removes what made them beloved heroes.
Superman's Stories Have a Major Kryptonite Issue, and Even DC Is Ready to Point It Out
Kryptonite has been Superman's most often used weakness since it first debuted in 1943. Superman's might made it a good narrative device to hold him in check and ground his stories. But even DC is realizing that these days it might be somewhat dependent on Kryptonite, which is not quite natural.
Dreamer tries to get away from the Suicide Squad in Nicole Maines, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira: Dream Team #4. Her tenure with the team has, however, already established a close relationship between her and Bizarro, Superman's opposite from Bizarro-World. Clock King tries to kill him with a Blue Kryptonite bullet, which is Bizarro's worst weakness, when he releases her by cutting her bonds. Bizarro's response to this action is very flawless: he yells, "Kryptonite cheating! Nothing Kryptonite!
Kryptonite shouldn't be completely eliminated.
With his more unusual defects, nobody else handles this narrative issue in their stories as extensively as Superman. DC shouldn't completely cut off Kryptonite, though, as this is important to keep in mind. Dream Team #4's Suicide Squad shows how Kryptonite might be utilized to produce a potent Superman plot point. Bizarro quickly dies from a Blue Kryptonite bullet after saving Dreamer and at last understanding he can be more than just a weapon or a villain. A compelling narrative aspect is the fact that this long-standing villain at last realizes he may be a hero but then has his life suddenly cut short since he disobeyed Waller.
This is a wonderful application of Kryptonite; it transforms Bizarro into a sad hero rather than stopping him from battling. Kryptonite will always be a major component of DCU continuity and always feature in DC history. But Bizarro said it best—that of "cheating"—ultimately. Because of how it "cheats" fans out of a decent fight, kryptonite is practically a significant issue in Superman stories; even DC seems to be finally noticing.
