Undeniably Epic New Fanart shows Gohan finally facing Goku Black.
Though regrettably, that development happened in two separate realities, at that, Gohan lately replaced one of the most potent DBS villains in the franchise as one of his replacement in Dragon Ball Super. But one unquestionably spectacular piece of fanart fixes that since it sets Gohan against the evil Goku Black, also known as Zamasu.
User KAKERU (@DBSKAKERU1) posts a piece of fanart done in the same manner as the Dragon Ball Super manga (a colorful version) portraying Gohan challenging Goku Black with a surprised Trunks viewing from the sidelines on X (previously Twitter). While Gohan is channeling his Mystic form and removing his button-down shirt and tie to get ready for the forthcoming battle, Goku Black is powered-up to Super Saiyan Rosé. Since Gohan did not travel to Trunks' other reality to assist him fight Goku Black with Goku and Vegeta during Super's original "Future Trunks," this Fanart is offering Dragon Ball fans something they were deprived of in Dragon Ball Super (manga and anime). Although the fanart doesn't show the fight itself, it gives viewers the chance to speculate on how the battle would have gone as well as how Gohan would have matched-up to the apparently relentless Zamasu.
Dragon Ball Fanart Redeems Two Different Gohan Versions
More than just a great visual Dragon Ball fans were deprived of in the main series canon, Gohan challenging Goku Black gives Gohan the opportunity to redeem both versions of himself from the future timeline and main timeline. Based on events of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan dies before Zamasu strikes in the future universe when Android 17 and Android 18 kill him. Future Trunks was thus compelled to handle Goku Black all by himself in Super and why Future Gohan never had the opportunity to fight him.
Then, upon Future Trunks visiting the main Dragon Ball timeline to enlist anyone ready to battle Zamasu from his future reality, he encountered Gohan and first felt let down. His one-armed master from his timeline was seen by the "adult Gohan" Trunks; the last time he saw the main-timeline Gohan was when he vanquished Cell as the first Super Saiyan 2. Trunks encountered Super's adult Gohan, though, and observed that Gohan had essentially turned his attention to his family and job rather than battling. Now in this Fanart, Gohan not only gets the opportunity to battle Goku Black exactly as his "Future" version would have, but he also proves to Trunks that he is more than simply a family man—that he is the very formidable warrior Trunks remembers.
Though exciting, Gohan Fighting Goku Black did not happen in Dragon Ball Canon.
Though Trunks himself would agree, it is true that Gohan most likely would have risen to the occasion to face Goku Black, therefore betraying his story.
Originally disappointed, Trunks finally sees how happy Gohan is and understands that he is living a life his previous master could only dream of. Neither Trunks nor Gohan would trade that for anything in the world. Based on much said during the Tournament of Power and then reinforced in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gohan is the pinnacle of a hesitant warrior. And that's because Gohan discovered peace—something few fighters are able to do. The moments when Gohan does fight are far more significant to his overall plot since he was not in a stage in his life to be disturbed that peace with violence during the "Future Trunks Saga". Though it would have changed the direction of Gohan's storyline, watching him face Goku Black would have been unquestionably fantastic all the same, and that's exactly what Dragon Ball Super fans get with this incredible work of Fanart.
