Shoya’s whole thing was like a super speedy rewind of how his friendship with his classmates made him feel the need to start bullying Shoko! We could see a whole bunch of more nuance from him as we watch him change.

That extra time, with all those manga pages, was also perfect to see things from Shoko’s side too. Shoko’s mom in the film is super stoic but the manga lets us see a different version of her! She might be a little overbearing with her kids but that just adds so much to her backstory.
Those moments, which showed the terrible way she got treated in other schools and when her mom made her change her hair, was so powerful in the manga, because it’s raw.

Where Does the Movie Leave Off from the Manga?

There are also a bunch of moments that were cut from the movie! Those additional parts gave the manga this emotional, awesome ending!
The manga had that scene, too, where all the classmates put together a movie and it was part of the climax! That was so important because that whole project helped everyone connect better with one another!
There was so much about how everyone got together! But in the movie, it was just the big heart-felt moments with Shoya and Shoko.

The A Silent Voice film did do great. Fans thought it was awesome. And those animation experts at Kyoto Animation - totally killed it. We all were hooked, but that A Silent Voice film was just a preview.
