Reunited for the first time since Young Sheldon, McKenna Grace and Raegan Revord exposes the most underappreciated tragedy connected to George's death.
Months after Young Sheldon stopped, Missy and Paige actors Raegan Revord and McKenna Grace get back together to powerfully highlight one of the most tragic sides of George's death. When George passed away from a heart attack, the prequel finally decided to follow the more general points of the established continuity despite contradicting the canon countless times in its running. With its first half dedicated to the Coopers coming to terms with the tragedy, this turned into the launching pad for the one-hour Young Sheldon finale. Everyone handled the situation differently as they worked to forward after the great loss.
Arguably, George's funeral is the best episode in The Big Bang Theory. The show aimed to perfect this masterclass in balancing drama and comedy over years. Although the trip has been broken out several times, one thing that is sometimes missed: Missy's lack of support during that period. Mary knew Meemaw, who had Dale. While Sheldon tried to ignore it, Georgie found strength from his new family; Dr. Sturgis and Dr. Linkletter inspired him. Missy turned to lash out at practically everyone since she had nowhere to rely on.
Apart from adhering to the canon of The Big Bang Theory, George's death and funeral let the writers bring back many well-known personalities for one last farewell. Beloved supporting characters like Reba McEntire's June Ballard rallied the family through the unthinkable course of events. Young Sheldon was unable to revive all of the major role players in the program despite this. Paige's absence from its last season was especially troublesome since it left her fate in flux. Apart from that, Grace's recent reunion with Revord highlights one other element the prequel omitted in not bringing her back.
There has been a lot of discussion on Young Sheldon's underuse of Revord's character. Missy became among the most vibrant characters in the prequel, while she was hardly in The Big Bang Theory. Unfortunately, whereas the stories of her family members changed, hers did not. Missy's last gripping arc was her rebellious trip in season six, where Paige and she tried to drive to Florida. Though he didn't fully express their friendship, Young Sheldon had a strong bond in a way they seemed to grasp each other's problems. Missy could have turned to Paige as she worked through her loss over George.
Seeing Revord and Grace maintain their off-screen friendship reminds us of their relationship in Young Sheldon, something the CBS show could have given more time over years. The finale might have featured Paige visiting Missy following George's death in a quick scene despite the limited screen time left. From there, they might have had a moving discussion on their different early years challenges. Given Missy's support during Paige's worst times, this could have been her method of returning that very thoughtful gesture.
The Young Sheldon finale manages to highlight the most destructive character departure in the show among the confusion of George's death. By stressing Missy's depth of relationship with Paige, the finale might have shown a more adult side of her. The absence of this scene represents a lost chance to convey Missy's more grown-up side and a closer awareness of her loss. Though it was finally neglected, this scenario had great resonance for viewers.
