Will Ferrell a comedian, writer, actor, and producer that is widely known for his appearances on Saturday Night Live along with countless movies and television appearances.
Ferrell first visited NBC’s Studio 8H in the year 1994 which showcased an audition showcasing fearlessness, eccentric personality and comedy range that would become his staples. SNL 50 gives viewers access to his audition where he showed multiple personas that stood out.
His audition which focused on being creative was noted as a major aspect of his performance. In addition, he showed confidence while creating a unique atmosphere. SNL 50 showcases a lot about this audition that brought about some unique opportunities for his career.
He auditioned with an impersonation of the baseball announcer Harry Caray but also added a twist by putting his persona in a dramatic scene and a mix of impersonating U.S Senator Ted Kennedy while trying out some stand up comedy. “Get Off the Shed” was another audition that involved a regular dad who is doing a BBQ until he erupts over his kids which had a mixture of silliness with intensity.
His final act during his tryout he impersonated a worker playing with cat toys, rolling around and being silly with the idea. This unique style is one that showed that he was willing to show himself completely different which also added intrigue with a variety of reactions.
He officially joined the show in 1995 for season 21. The new series “SNL50” gives details of how he reacted on his first show and where they drew inspiration from with his first sketch and other future ones. The program shows various clips which helps provide more details into his approach on his early years with “SNL”.
His sketch from the audition was included on the first episode of his season which showcased he has already become a strong contender. Though his debut had an initial blunder it pushed him to try harder. This added more interest to see his progression with other work he was able to do for his time at SNL.
His presence as a core cast member continued throughout several years as he perfected notable impressions and various new character dynamics. He stayed until the year 2002. "SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night" has a look back on his journey.
He's created numerous roles such as Alex Trebek on "Celebrity Jeopardy", Janet Reno, and “More Cowbell” Gene Frenkle. These roles helped create his notoriety as a comedy master. Those skits show that the writers of the shows saw something great in his versatility and range in styles that has made him an iconic cast member.
He recalls that in one of his earliest episodes he messed up his first live TV line when he was told from SNL's Lorne Michaels, "No pressure, the show is all riding on you". His take away from this was how to continue to push through in spite of early set backs.
Though his first show had some initial missteps he stated he took that experience and his title given to him as "Most Annoying Newcomer" by a publication and put it in the door of his office. He took this with a great sense of humor to keep his motivation in working to excel in all new and creative roles. He created his personal outlook based off a critique that could have hurt another actor’s feelings.
With great creativity, fearless approach he often goes for what feels funny rather than any other opinion to follow through with different scenes. He was able to showcase many various characters due to his approach to be “weirder” while using his original thoughts to create magic.
Former costar Rachel Dratch noted that his original approach to writing allowed for his best qualities to shine. This showcases his talent for using whatever is available and make it the best moment that it can be. His freedom to experiment has allowed a large portfolio of different character studies and skits that all are relatable. He focuses on what made him laugh, ignoring what may or may not make others in particular appreciate or understand his views.
He's currently starred in the recent blockbuster hit film, “Barbie”, where his character was notable throughout the media. Along with this film his new project “You’re Cordially Invited” also features Reese Witherspoon in a production that will launch on January 30, 2025.
