Amazon Prime Video Confirmed "Hunters" Season 2 Was The Finale
After a long wait for "Hunters" season 2, Amazon Prime Video confirmed it would be the final season. The series premiered in February 2020 and received mixed reviews. Season 2 was delayed for years before finally coming out in January 2023. The long wait led fans to wonder if there would be more. But with season 2 wrapping up many of the series' major storylines, it was confirmed that "Hunters" season 3 wouldn't happen.
In Season 2, "Hunters" follows two timelines. The first takes place in 1979 as Jonah and the hunters track down Adolf Hitler in Argentina. The second follows Meyer Offerman (revealed in "Hunters" season 1's twist ending to be Nazi Wilhelm Zuchs, A.K.A. "The Wolf") from 1975, when he first begins killing Nazis, until 1977, when he orders Ruth Heidelbaum's death. Season 2 brings satisfying conclusions to both stories, something creator David Weil remarked to EW would provide "catharsis" and Jewish empowerment.
"Hunters" Season 2's Ending Made a Third Season Unnecessary
After the revelation that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun were alive and hiding in Argentina in season 1, Season 2 followed the natural progression of the series. The season concluded with Jonah and his associates tracking down Hitler and bringing him to justice. Jonah, Millie, Harriet, Lonny, Roxy, Joe, and Mindy successfully locked Hitler in a cell for the rest of his life, making a third season less necessary. The season 2 ending provided a sense of closure and a fulfilling conclusion to the main storyline.
With the primary goal of capturing Hitler achieved, there was less reason to continue the series. The show's core focus was on bringing Hitler to justice, and achieving that goal provided a natural endpoint. This ending felt satisfying, especially for the characters who had dedicated themselves to this mission.
What Could Have Happened in "Hunters" Season 3?
While "Hunters" season 3 wasn't happening, it could have followed a similar plot to the first season, with the group of hunters going after the remaining Nazis around the globe. The main villain could have been Travis, the evil neo-Nazi who escaped in the season 2 Finale. Travis' whereabouts are unclear in the ending, leaving a mystery about how his plans to lead the "Fourth Reich" would be foiled.
The final scene of Jonah subtly tracking another Nazi at a restaurant in Miami suggests he would eventually find Travis and stop the villain's plans. Even with Hitler in prison, evil was still present. There would inevitably be more villainous Nazis for the characters to track down and stop. Jonah and his associates would continue their dangerous work, only stopping when every Nazi is exposed and brought to justice for their crimes.
Cast and Crew Thoughts on the Ending
Although many were disappointed about the lack of a third season, the cast and crew expressed positive feelings about the series Finale. Lead actor Logan Lerman, in an interview with THR, was satisfied with the series finale and Jonah's arc in season 2. He appreciated the opportunity to play the character from start to finish and explore the evolution of Jonah's character.
Showrunner David Weil was also content with the story he got to tell. He saw the importance of putting Adolf Hitler on trial and giving Jonah the chance to choose between darkness and light. Weil recognized the need to address the violence and genocide of the Holocaust while acknowledging the ongoing challenges of hatred, bigotry, prejudice, antisemitism, and racism.
The Ending of "Hunters" Was Perfect
Season 2 of "Hunters" saw Jonah go after an even bigger target and provided flashbacks of The Wolf, showcasing his backstory. The ending of the season made a third season unnecessary. Jonah captured Adolf Hitler, and there was no greater target or sense of accomplishment he could achieve.
Bringing down Adolf Hitler and putting him on trial for his crimes was the best possible ending. The series concluded perfectly. It would have been easy to continue the series with Jonah hunting down more escaped Nazi war criminals, but nothing would have been as impactful as the capture of Hitler and bringing him to justice.
