Game of Thrones Recasting Daario Naharis
Among Game of Throne's most well-known characters was Daario Naharis. Daenerys Targaryen's lover and main ally, Daario was a talented warrior and leader who enabled Daenerys to seize Yunkai and Meereen. Daario's part in season 4, however, underwent an unexpected shift. Years of debate have surrounded this choice as Michiel Huisman replaced Ed Skrein as Daario Naharis.
Introduced in Season 3, episode "Second Sons," Daario Naharis was a sellsword company hired by Daenerys Targaryen. Acting in three episodes, Ed Skrein was the first actor to portray Daario. When Daario started to play a more central part in season 4, Michiel Huisman took over and the audience of the show was confused and annoyed.
Why was Daario Naharis recast?
Ever since it took place in 2014, the Daario Naharis recast has been enigmatic. Although HBO and the Game Of Thrones creative team did not release any official comments regarding the causes for the recast, many have speculated that Skrein and the showrunners had a contract conflict or creative differences.
Reasons Ed Skrein Left Game of Thrones
Ed Skrein answered the speculations in an Entertainment Weekly interview about leaving Game Of Thrones to star in The Transporter Refueled. Skrein says the recast was more "political" than he decided to leave the show. Skrein claims that although it was a lot more political than that, "that's what the press has reported". I intended to be with Game of Thrones for a very long time. That was always what I intended. I would have dearly loved to. Though politics drove us apart, it was an amazing experience. And from there I simply said, "Okay, look forward, be positive. Remain composed and keep on. When things go right, I keep grounded and avoid becoming overwhelmed by the hype; this is my mindset; it is also my attitude when the plans alter.
Interpretation of Daario Naharis by Michiel Huisman
Daario Naharis was portrayed in Michiel Huisman's version by clearly different personality than Skrein's. Reflecting the Daario in George R. R. Martin's writings more precisely, Skrein's Daario was a little more arrogant and cocky. Huisman's Daario was less showy and more brooding. Huisman's Daario at least had a beard, while Skrein's was entirely clean-shaven. Although neither Daario's look matched the book description.
Daario Naharis Recast: Not the only one
Over the eight seasons, Game of Thrones featured numerous other recasts. Conan Stevens, Ian Whyte, and finally Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson recast twice, but this made sense since The Mountain had few lines and was covered in prosthesis. Although Tommen and Myrcella Baratheon were also recast, this made sense since their roles grew in the later seasons, thus the performers who portrayed them in the early seasons were not appropriate. Richard Brake played the Night King for one episode before Vladimír Furdík took over.
Recast the House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon, the prequel series, also boasts a fair number of recasts. For Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower as well as their children, the time jumps in the series demanded a total recast. Planned from the start of the show, the recasts were done to capture the aging of the characters.
Daario Naharis: Will He Make a Spinoff Visit?
Daario Naharis might reappearance in one of the several Game of Thrones spin-offs under development. Daario's future is yet unknown, though, without any news regarding his post-Game of Thrones exploits. George R. R. Martin might yet provide some illumination on this character in his forthcoming book, The Winds of Winter.
Where the actors of Daario Naharis followed after Game of Thrones
Though the Daario Naharis recast is a divisive choice, Skrein and Huisman have had successful careers since leaving the show. Skrein starred in The Transporter: Refueled, then in villainous parts in Alita: Battle Angel, If Beale Street Could Talk. Skrein is shooting the forthcoming adaptation of Anthony Doerr's book All the Light We Cannot See right now.
Since Game of Thrones, Michiel Huisman has also been active appearing in the horror film The Invitation and the film The Age of Adaline. He also had roles in The Flight Attendant and The Haunting of Hill House on television. Together with Ed Skrein, Huisman will feature in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon.
