Why Butcher Sees Kessler in 'The Boys' Season 4
In 'The Boys' Season 4, Butcher isn't actually talking to the real Joe Kessler, who died long ago. The Kessler we see is a hallucination caused by Butcher's brain tumor. But why does Butcher see Kessler, specifically?
Think of Becca as Butcher's angel, representing his good side. Kessler, on the other hand, embodies his inner devil. Throughout the season, Kessler pushes Butcher to go further, to betray his team and even consider genocide to take down Homelander.
The 2 Main Reasons Butcher Sees Kessler
So, why Kessler? Well, there are two big reasons:
First, Butcher and Kessler shared a deep bond built on their hatred of Supes. They imagined themselves giving in to their darkest urges, and Butcher still connects those dark impulses to Kessler.
Second, Butcher feels guilt over Kessler's death and his own dark desires. He blames himself for not saving his friend, and Kessler appears whenever he feels guilt, whether it's for resenting his team or wanting to kill all Supes.
The Kessler reveal is a cool twist, but it also limits Jeffrey Dean Morgan's role. Since he's just a hallucination, Kessler can't have his own storylines or even interact with anyone else. So, while the reveal tells us more about Butcher, it does come at a cost.
