Guillermo's Shadows: Breaking Free From Nandor's Hold

What We Do in the Shadows season 6 (premiering October 21st, 2024 on FX; hitting Hulu the next day!) is shaping up to be a wild ride!  And this new season, which the creators confirmed would be the final one; shows how Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) might finally break free from that crazy on-again, off-again relationship with his vampire master Nandor!  This is major news, folks; and we all really have to realize why this is a key plot development for both Guillermo and Nandor. It opens new opportunities for both those very distinct and interesting characters. This last season's significance as the very end means all the character arcs and potential changes which might occur would really impact how audiences actually look at everything. We will explore exactly what makes this potential character arc incredibly intriguing for the coming events.

The whole cast returned! It includes that famous, creative team—Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement— from that original movie (2014). We pick things up right where we left off – and you know, those last events from season 5 ended with some surprising events and these changed situations create an amazing base for new storytelling possibilities! The finale is on December 16th! Critically, many see this season as highly successful and may become a major contender for an Emmy nomination in Outstanding comedy series! Everything's about to end, so expect all that last minute brilliance which often marks finales for many of those high quality television series!

Hypnosis: The Key to Guillermo's Freedom?

Jerry the Vampire (Mike O'Brien) from What We Do in the Shadows Image

Vampires in What We Do in the Shadows have insane powers; one frequently used for controlling human interaction. Colin Robinson tries to hypnotize Nandor (in his sleep!) to prevent Nadja and Laszlo from teaming up against him – demonstrating once again the importance and implications behind having those supernatural abilities. And despite Colin Robinson’s scheme failing – that scene serves another crucial, even far more significant role than the attempted action itself. That sequence shows those additional possible outcomes; this accidental self-hypnosis of Guillermo (which follows after seeking out Baron Afanas’ help), highlighting an essential element which we will later realize serves an extremely useful plot point!

Remember Jerry (Mike O’Brien), that new roommate vamp, appearing early season 6? The new additions really serve to generate additional changes, further intensifying all the interpersonal conflicts within that vampire household!

Why Guillermo Can't Just Walk Away

Even after Guillermo “moves on” (lives in a shed; still dragged into the vamp drama, season 6), he’s deeply tied to them. To truly escape? Guillermo needs to forget them all, which incidentally already exists in game canon: those other characters have these spells allowing that specific memory-wiping! Guillermo completely forgets being a vampire post-hypnosis, then asks Nandor to be a familiar again!  To go solo? Permanent hypnosis; potentially!

Guillermo's journey in this new season, season 6 is far more intense than what was seen previously, especially considering just how close to the end it actually is!   It’s no longer this question of if he will become a vampire or how long that difficult choice to maintain an important familial relationship continues. He got there already. Yet it continues even in this newest arc that those earlier events and relationships greatly influence him! The path for escaping Nandor’s shadow could potentially lead toward hypnosis– a risky choice with uncertain consequences. It might be his only chance for total independence from his long relationship! That last season brings in many unresolved conflicts, and only more will arise during those impending later episodes!
