Truth Social is a social media platform founded by Donald Trump that is very vocal about having free speech at its forefront. It is a place he created to share thoughts without being bound by limitations. Recent activities highlight its unique purpose of its own type of discourse and also how it plays in his everyday method of communication.
Trump’s use of this platform is a primary mode of interaction with his supporters, the public and for some who he chooses to call out through his posts. This platform allows a direct view to the unfiltered communications that many follow and want to hear for his latest points and concerns.
His communications have been described as “rants” which often showcase frustration over current media reports or opinions that he might deem negative against him. In his rants Trump calls others names in his style which causes a ripple affect across the political climate creating great attention for the messages. His use of the platform is now known for these methods to express different feelings.
One of Trump’s most recent issues comes from Seth Myers a television host . After Meyers mocked Trump on his show the president took to social media to call the host “dumb and untalented” in addition to threatening the parent company of NBC, Comcast. This incident showcases how he uses Truth Social to directly respond to individuals and address companies that own the networks.
Many may notice the consistency in attacking media outlets as Trump continues to bash networks that he believes are biased against him or share his viewpoints in a negative format. These viewpoints he also sees as an “in kind” donations for the “Radical Left Democratic Party." This adds the theme of divisiveness throughout all of his social media activity while adding suspense to many responses.
Trump often claims to be a promoter of free speech and that he does want more of that format in the current media structure. However he also wants those that challenge him to “pay a big price” through actions that are aggressive. He uses that type of language in what might be seen as a threat to those who go against his positions. Many believe that with Trump in office again there is going to be some attempt at quelling views that do not agree with his actions or opinions.
By deriding his views those that may not always agree with what Trump has to say he makes the media become a target by calling the media “enemies of the people.” There has been a concern that there will be government push back against those that try to check and review any of Trump’s stances which are in direct contrast to free speech.
Many contrast Trump’s relationship with the media with that of President Joe Biden. Biden made appearances on shows and made friendly moments with the networks and individuals that represent those. The president-elect has no time for anything he deems is not “positive” when it comes to the views presented and expects compliance with those terms.
In Trump’s administration people have noted concerns that the Federal Communications Commission may take on a different viewpoint of certain issues specifically in areas related to news coverage. These concerns add more reasons as to what free speech may mean while using this social media site or seeing its usage throughout different administrations and times.
Truth Social offers a different and more direct method of getting new as they are offered. These methods however could easily have negative implications if one is not also using additional sources and should not be regarded as the main platform to gather information. Those that support may enjoy direct news access through the app but caution may be needed for a non biased format.
It is important to consume multiple forms of information to gain different perspectives. Truth Social presents Trump’s viewpoint and provides an unfiltered way of seeing those points but this is important to also pair up with facts from sources that are both neutral and show all viewpoints when offering an opinion on complex topics.
