The Timeless Child Solves a Big Doctor Who Mystery
Ever since Chris Chibnall made a wild change to Doctor Who's timeline with the "Timeless Child" thing, the Doctor's history has been all sorts of wonky. You have a million questions, and frankly, the showrunners haven't quite worked out all the answers yet, but at least they cleared up one really confusing mystery. The problem with all the alternate timelines is this: if other Doctors exist out there in those parallel universes, why haven't we ever seen them? It's like, they're in those worlds doing cool Doctor stuff, but the Doctor in our main timeline just kind of forgets to call up those other guys to help him out! That never made much sense before Chibnall's big change!
Think of the iconic episodes, like "Inferno," which features the Third Doctor, and "Rise of the Cybermen," with the Tenth Doctor - those Doctors are both busy saving Earth from terrible bad guys. But they just kind of ignore all those other, maybe even better, versions of themselves out there! What gives, right? It was so perplexing. And if those alternate timelines actually exist, why hasn't there ever been any explanation? What does that mean for the Doctor Who multiverse? But the Timeless Child does a really neat thing: It puts a pin in that question.
Why There Isn't Another Doctor In Parallel Universes
The main story has a ton to do with a "Doctor," and even the Doctor being an odd alien with powers that allow for them to "regenerate" a bunch of times was strange enough! This is not your standard, run-of-the-mill science fiction story anymore. But, according to the Timeless Child lore, everything changed with this Doctor who wasn't even born on Gallifrey like everyone else!
But the craziest bit was that he fell through some crazy interdimensional rip! That made it totally possible that all those Doctors we never saw - those in other timelines - maybe just never happened! Their version of the Doctor just never had that special jump through the universe. He never fell into our reality. It means that, with those different timelines, there might not even be any Time Lords out there at all, since there's no way a Doctor would ever exist in a place where those magical Gallifreyan powers aren't a thing. So yeah, that's one big question solved.
The Doctor’s Uniqueness Makes Sense
If those Time Lords are real in our universe - the Time Lords we all love in the main stories, like the first Doctor and his crew - that means there were some pretty serious, game-changing events for Gallifrey in our timeline. Remember that The Timeless Child story basically made it impossible to have a 'standard' Time Lord.
Imagine how complicated things could have gotten! Because in every other reality, things just happened in a totally different way. They didn't get that Doctor who can "regenerate". It means that maybe in those alternate timelines, the Time Lords wouldn't even have the power to keep regenerating! So what does that say for all the other Time Lords? Do they only exist in our reality? It just adds another dimension of confusion!
The Multiverse's Next Frontier for Doctor Who
Since Doctor Who’s a pretty popular TV show (it has over 50 years’ worth of awesome stories to choose from) it's almost impossible to tell if there's anything in those alternate universes, that hasn't already been covered, especially now with all those different Doctors and alternate versions of familiar stories. It's really exciting to imagine! And imagine if Doctor Who gets around to introducing some of those alternative Doctors! That would be awesome! Who knows, maybe we'll finally get to see those other Doctors and the new Doctor in some crazy new adventures across time and space?
It's wild to think that this crazy theory – the Timeless Child - could help shape the next few years of the Doctor Who universe! We might see stories featuring multiversal journeys that really twist the whole thing on its head, like some cosmic mind bender! Maybe they could bring back a classic Doctor (think Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee) from a parallel reality!
More Crazy Time Lord Stuff to Come
If there is one thing fans are sure about, the Doctor is always gonna get up to crazy new adventures. With Russell T Davies taking the reins again, and all that amazing "Timeless Child" chaos, Doctor Who has gone and reinvented itself in ways nobody imagined.
I bet fans will have even more questions now than they ever had. Now that the main Doctor is confirmed to be more special, even amongst all of those Time Lords, and the universe might be much stranger and even more mind-blowing than before, the only question that remains: will we see the end of this story and finally get all those answers we need?
