Among Valiant's most important characters is Rai.

Every iteration of the Valiant Universe has found Rai to be absolutely vital. Beginning its superhero line in 1991, Valiant licensed Western Publishing's Solar and Magnus Robot Fighter among other characters. Designed by Jim Shooter and Paul Creddick, Rai is unique among early Valiant heroes. Set in the far future 41st century, Rai uses his nanite-enhanced abilities to protect New Japan, but finally rebels against Father, his dictator. Rai now must battle not only Father (now known as Bloodfather) but also a Darque onslaught.

Headlining a critically praised game penned by the likes of Matt Kindt and Dan Abnett, Rai reappeared as part of the new Valiant Universe in 2014 and now Abnett has returned to mentor Rai to Valiant's Resurgence. Thanks to a primer at the beginning of the issue, Abnett and Utrera have produced a narrative entirely within reach of novices. Though his new nemeseses in the Darque employ magic, Rai is a pure science fiction figure. Darque's presence in the book gives Rai: The Book of the Darque #1 horror, as Utrera discovers some quite repulsive animals.

Simultaneously, Rai: The Book of the Darque #1 is also really darkly funny. The humor of the novel mostly relies on Rai's "family," comprising Uncle Fusion and Raijin. Right down to the crazy uncle, Rai's family tries to resemble a "normal" sitcom-style household. With Rai: The Book of the Darque, Valiant Comics owns something special. It is a frightening horror comic as well as a high-concept science fiction superhero book. Add in the dark, gallows humor and Rai: The Book of the Darque becomes a high point on the route to Valiant's Resurge.
