Fans have argued for more than twenty years about the actual goal of the Clone Wars, mostly with an eye toward their terrible effect on the Jedi Order. But the war's convoluted operations were far more complicated, involving a more overall strategic goal than just wiping off the Jedi.
The genius behind the Clone Wars, Darth Sidious planned the conflict with a sly and all-encompassing vision. Although destroying the Jedi was a top goal, the war was meant to have more overall effects: the emergence of the Sith and the building of the Galactic Empire.
The Clone Wars were painstakingly created to undermine the democratic framework of the Republic as well as to weaken the Jedi. Disguised as the kind Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, Sidious deftly controlled the cosmic unrest by leveraging the war to bolster his authority and open path for his Sith Empire.
Designed by the Sith, the war was a well calibrated instrument. Once revered protectors of peace, the Jedi were turned into military leaders who betrayed their basic values and degraded their reputation among the galaxy.
The Clone Wars caught the Jedi in a lie. Using a pre-programmed command buried in the clone army's programming, Order 66 let the Sith turn the Jedi's own troops against them. The resulting massacre destroyed the Jedi Order, killing most of its members and leaving the few survivors hunted fugitives.
By presenting the Jedi as enemies of the state and opening the path for the emergence of the Sith Empire, this manipulation fed a story of treachery. Once symbols of peace and justice, the Jedi were essentially demonized to guarantee their extinction and the concentration of Sith might.
The ambition of the Sith went beyond just killing the Jedi. Their ultimate objective was to wipe their legacy and guarantee they never would resurfaced. This was achieved by the well planned campaign known as The Clone Wars, which presented the Jedi as traitorous people permanently tarnishing their reputation in the galaxy.
The Clone Wars transcended a mere planetary conflict. It was a tool for manipulation, a way to destroy the previous system and install a new one run under Sith authority. Master manipulator Sidious used the war to change the galaxy in his picture, turning the Republic into an oppressive Empire and guaranteeing Sith's rule.
Designed to destroy the Jedi Order, undermine the Republic, and open the path for Sith rule, the Sith-directed Clone Wars were a multifarious and extensive campaign. The Sith reached their ultimate aim—the destruction of the Jedi and the building of a galaxy under their control—by changing the course of the war and applying the Jedi's own ideals against them.
