The Penguin Episode 5: Julian Rush - Gotham's Harley Quinn?

The Penguin: Meet Julian Rush, Gotham's Twisted Harley Quinn!

Gotham's New Power Couple: Sofia Falcone and Her Unhinged Ally

The Penguin episode 5 throws a major curveball, introducing Gotham's own version of Harley Quinn: The ever-so-charming Dr. Julian Rush! We get to see a very explosive climax to those earlier plots as Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone triumph, leaving a trail of bloodshed and a new dynamic taking control of Gotham's underworld! Both Oz and Sofia emerge victorious after various brutal events that eliminate everyone involved. After getting rid of all the Falcone family (episode 4), Sofia (after killing them off), completely eliminates Sal Maroni's entire family (wife and son); demonstrating their brutal effectiveness and ability for those kinds of actions required to seize power.  This event however sets up several events later. Now OzSofia, and Julian must play this very intense game for the new status quo which they all just created for themselves!

Matt Reeves' The Batman universe is grounded, gritty, and already populated by those iconic villains–like Riddler (remember that amazing opening sequence involving the bomb and the resulting storyline for that new character?), CatwomanMagpie, the Penguin, and the Joker. We see some hints regarding how dangerous this version of Joker actually is. But Harley Quinn’s existence? A major question mark still. Until now.

The flashbacks in The Penguin reveal Dr. Julian Rush— an Arkham psychiatrist– originally treating Sofia Falcone when she faced that “Hangman” murder accusation. But Rush’s fascination with Sofia was very evident and it didn't entirely look benign; an early red flag of things that happen much, much later in that episode’s climax, creating immense excitement regarding how this character will change and what those changes mean for the larger universe. Many years after Sofia eliminated her family; Julian appears from nowhere, making those seemingly insane pronouncements that highlight those dark themes within this series which could create incredible tension going forward!

This man's total admiration shows just why this story is so much more fascinating and what creates immense intrigue from the start: His statements showing total and utter complicity make that reveal just so unexpected!

Why Julian Rush is Even Better Than Harley Quinn

Both Harley and Julian are Arkham therapists with that disturbing obsessive fascination with patients. Yet their arcs vary wildly. Joker manipulates and controls Harley Quinn, and her villainy stems from that abuse, something often explored across numerous DC Comics storylines that help make that character an icon. However, Julian isn't some innocent. This new version's different, folks. This entire character, from the start was intensely aware and actively complicit within the events. It was a conscious choice, highlighting this dark turn– his complicity shows an entirely new version for that Harley Quinn dynamic and is also important in distinguishing those unique differences: unlike Harley Quinn, this individual Julian Rush, from the very start of his appearance on screen, became intensely responsible for his own decision, resulting in that new twisted, dark partnership created completely due to his free will.

The Penguin’s episode 5 changes Gotham. Oz and Sofia’s bloody victories make that status quo shift intensely satisfying for audiences; a creative and extremely innovative use of established characters from DC universe with that dark and violent new tone entirely suitable to that narrative structure; bringing back the expected yet unexpectedly surprising creative energy!  And the emergence of Julian Rush,  that compelling new character who functions as Gotham’s own Harley Quinn, makes this truly awesome– offering new thematic arcs never fully developed across those earlier stories!
