Talon's Tragic End: Is Laura Kinney's X-Men Alter Ego Really Gone?

Talon of X-Men: Journey and Destiny of Laura Kinney

For years Laura Kinney—better known as X-23 and subsequently Wolverine—has been a cherished X-Men character. Her narrative, however, has veered somewhat and culminates in the death of her most recent persona, Talon. But who was Talon and is she indeed gone for good?

Talon's Birth: Laura Kinney's Change

Laura Kinney started her trip in The Vault, a place where time runs faster than normal. Laura, Synch, and Darwin were dispatched to compile details on the Children of the Vault—post-human entities endowed with terrible powers. Inside, they spent millennia; Laura's sacrifice helped Synch upload his mind to Cerebro, so completing their task.

Laura's death in The Vault seemed definitive, though, and she lacked a backup like Synch did. Still, time and the X-men universe abound in surprises. Laura resumed her life as Wolverine after being resurrected devoid of her centuries of wisdom.

Then, a twist: another Laura Kinney—who lived hundreds of years—was found and returned to the actual world. With a lifetime of experience and a sliver of grey in her hair, the older Laura declined to assume the younger Wolverine's responsibilities. Rather, she chose to take the name Talon, which would have reflected her growing insight and maturity.

Tragic Death of Talon: Heartfelt Loss for X-Men Fans

Talon kept fighting alongside the X-men, her knowledge and ability much appreciated. Her time was cut short, though, during a fight with the High Evolutionary and she perished. Hoping to save Laura, Synch sought to hold her consciousness in his mind by drawing borrowed powers from Jean Grey.

Sadly Synch had to let go, which caused Talon to die permanently. X-Men viewers were devastated by this sad incident and started to doubt Laura Kinney's character's future.

Is Her Return Possible, the Future of Talon asks?

Mutant resurrection is no more a given choice when Hope and the Five die in the White Hot Room. Given Marvel's aim to avoid repeated X-23 characters in the continuity, this makes Talon's return apparently improbable.

Still, the X-Men universe presents lots of opportunities. Still feasible are time travel, cloning, even resurrection. Laura Kinney's Talon would not be shocking to see returning in the multiverse, eager to leave her mark once more.

Comprehending the X-Men: A Synopsis
