Season 3 of the Netflix horror K-drama, Sweet Home, starring Song Kang, delighted fans. One fact, though, has left many viewers devastated: Sweet Home season 4 is not airing.
Prominent among Netflix's most successful K-dramas, Sweet Home debuted in 2020 soon became a global sensation. Audiences all around were enthralled with the show's gripping plot, engaging characters, and amazing special effects. Though the first season was immensely popular, the second season didn't show up for three years. Fortunately, the waiting for season 3 was far shorter. But season 3 marks the show's official end.
Although many K-dramas run for just 16 episodes, streaming services like Netflix are emphasizing original content more and more, which is helping multi-season web series like Sweet Home to flourish. These shows have grown more and more common and frequently feature bigger budgets per episode. For four years, Sweet Home has been one of Netflix's flagship Korean shows; but, the platform has announced that season 3 marks the end.
With Netflix designating the first Sweet Home season 3 poster as the "final season," the announcement accompanied the release of that poster. Additionally confirming that season 3 would be the "grand finale" was Lee Eung-bok, the director behind the show from its inception. Fans most likely found this news to be mixed since it meant saying goodbye to cherished characters including Eun-hyeok (played by Lee Do-hyun), Hyun-su (Song Kang), and Eun-yu (Go Min-si). The writers of the show have stressed, though, that season 3 offers a fitting ending for the narrative.
Renewalled for two more seasons back in 2021, Sweet Home indicates that season 3 was intended to be the last chapter from the start. Sweet Home is based on a well-known webtoon, thus the ending of that webtoon fits the ending of season 1. Basically, the show would have stopped after the first season if Sweet Home had stayed faithful to its source material.
Kim Carnby's webtoon, which Hwang Young-chan illustrated, ends with Hyun-su turning into a hideous monster sacrificing himself to stop Joong-seop as the Green Home is destroyed. This reflects the incidents of season 1. Neither Lee Do-hyun's Eun-hyeok nor any other new character debuted in season 2 were part of the webtoon. Still, these folks were absolutely vital in the plot of season 3. Although it makes sense that the show would go on following the popularity of the first season, it is comforting to know that the ending was carefully thought out for some time.
Sweet Home centers on Hyun-su, a withdrawn high school student who moves into the Green Home apartment building following the untimely death of his family. Hyun-su and the people of Green Home are compelled to cooperate to survive when an enigmatic epidemic turns people into hideous creatures, confronting their inner demons and the terrible threats hiding outside.
Sweet Home presented fresh storylines and characters by straying from the webtoon's plot and following Hyun-su's journey, so transforming season 2 from the first. The show had to negotiate fresh ground outside of the source material, but the writers have done a fantastic job crafting a story that viewers would find appealing.
Sweet Home's triumph surely solidified its prominence as a major player in the K-dramas, and the show's last episode marks the end of an era. Although fans would be let down that season 4 will not be airing, the last season of the show closes the narrative firmly. Though mixed, the ending stays with viewers and helps them to value the fascinating universe Sweet Home has produced.
