There is one story that gives an answer! The popular "The Death of Superman" comics have a major, exciting moment in this iconic event! In the comic version, the superhero, who was battling it out with Doomsday, and ended up needing an incredibly powerful, tech-focused entity, called The Eradicator, to keep Superman's body and make it usable so that his energy could be restored! The whole story about "The Eradicator," is that he uses this weapon.
