Stephen King a master of the horror and suspense genre has had a huge influence on pop culture. This influence is present in many books, films and now a recent up and coming series which has viewers anticipation for a new piece of his creativity.
One of the most anticipated upcoming projects based off of his books will be HBO's “Welcome to Derry” a nine episode prequel set to explore the origins of Pennywise the clown . The story plans on taking its audience into the dark heart of the past where all forms of fear started and continue in his most terrifying settings.
The series acts as a prequel to It Chapter one where viewers see some hints of how the timeline would expand using information gathered from the past. This series will act as expansion for how different storylines will weave into each other. By using Mike Hanlon’s research from the original story a link is created between the past and all previous connections to the dark terror and monster of Derry.
There has been a three season plan created where the series will explore catastrophic events each one showing Pennywise’s influence on the area and the show will be explored going back in time with each series.
Season 1 is set in 1962 which then will transition into Season 2 in 1935 while the final season takes the story even farther back in 1908. By presenting the timeline backwards it allows for viewers to question how it came to where it is at and connect it to more background.
The director from "It" and “It Chapter Two” Andy Muschietti will return to the series along with other main talent who assisted with prior projects. Also Skarsgard, has returned to the role of Pennywise. This cast will be exploring the darkness of Pennywise’s journey while also attempting to showcase new creative elements to a beloved horror classic.
The plan is not to dilute the character of Pennywise, but instead to add dimensions from unexplored portions of the past and make it intense and memorable for both fans and new viewers. New faces joining the existing main cast bring in unique layers of character exploration.
Aside from “Welcome to Derry”, other Stephen King adaptations continue to see success whether through the film industry or now into streaming platforms. This demonstrates how much creative vision can be had within existing literature.
This Tom Holland film became popular as it trended in popularity charts on Netflix after 10 years of it's initial release. Though originally a major flop it has found an audience through a different platform and also has been talked about due to multiple cast members making it unique. In addition its historical and emotional content makes it resonate and connect more now with viewership.
“The Dark Tower" remains a series beloved by many. Though the film adaptation struggled the series shows a clear message on why long term development may be needed for some big properties. The film adaptation failed to fully develop what was needed but that doesn't deter readers of the series.
Though the film was seen as a flop due to many things such as budgetary issues along with its low success on multiple rating platforms it did still bring conversation into how a story is delivered. The creator of this work noted that a movie can only deliver so much information in a single production when the main story is far longer than average.
From all aspects and creations by King, the message is consistent. Using different formats such as television to film or even written text provides opportunity for a varied perspective of the universe. Using fear or any type of dark humor these creations all seem to create a memorable experience.
His writing is considered unique which has lead to a massive array of films and series that explore horror and unique points. Some new adaptions showcase the use of a more family-friendly tone or unique design perspectives, and still contain the original themes and messages to give them something new. Even stories which don't fully deliver during their releases seem to be rediscovered when given new access points for the fans.
