Star Wars Rebels Mystery Solved: How Ezra & Thrawn Survived Hyperspace!

The Star Wars universe is full of mysteries, and one of the biggest came from the ending of Star Wars Rebels! The disappearance of Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn left fans with major questions! But Ahsoka finally provided some answers!

The Purrgil and Hyperspace

In Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger, uses the power of the Force to summon the Purrgil, massive space whales! They're a key element of the story as they grabbed onto Thrawn's flagship, the Chimaera! They pulled it into hyperspace! This event was particularly significant, as Bendu, a powerful, mystical being predicted exactly how things would go. Thrawn faced defeat in an icy embrace by multiple arms!

This jump is super strange, though, and caused lots of speculation!

The Chimaera was in the atmosphere!
The Purrgil caused major damage as its tentacles broke through the ship's windows! However, there wasn't a sudden explosive decompression.
The big mystery is- how did Ezra and Thrawn survive the jump itself?

Surviving Hyperspace

Hyperspace in Star Wars is crazy! It's a vacuum and going into it can be perilous!

There are two big theories:

There are energy shields on the ship. The Chimaera probably had these shields around its windows as protection. There is precedent for this! A scene in Bounty Hunters #19 shows a similar thing happening with energy shields saving some Imperial crewmembers!
The Purrgil are themselves very strange creatures and can breathe in a vacuum! As they are also able to traverse hyperspace. They likely created a protective field, keeping those aboard safe!

A New Galaxy

When the Purrgil and the Chimaera arrived in a new area! They arrived in Peridea, an interesting new area! Fans were left wondering. Did they even survive the trip to get there? They were certainly facing new obstacles and peril!

The same energy shields protecting the Chimaera probably helped in the re-entry. Landing wasn't easy, as the Star Destroyer isn't equipped to land wherever they were headed and this made things incredibly hazardous! But Ahsoka showed that this certainly happened.

The mystery that has not been completely answered is how did Ezra get away from Thrawn. Given that Ezra was right next to him, how he managed to survive being near Thrawn and a fully crewed Star Destroyer might have some possibilities. Maybe he slipped out of the Chimaera and escaped with a rescue pod or possibly left during the chaos of arrival, a way that is reminiscent of a way he escaped earlier in Ahsoka!

The Enduring Mystery

The Ahsoka series provided more than enough to help clear the major questions of what happened in Star Wars Rebels.
