Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Reversed Voyager's "Shattered"
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 drew much of its inspiration from Star Trek: Voyager, including reworking a fantastic time travel episode from Voyager season 7.
"Cracked Mirror," episode 14 of Prodigy season 2, deftly reinterpreted Voyager season 7, episode 11, "Shattered." In both episodes, an outside power separates the Uss Voyager into several time periods or parallel universes. While "Cracked Mirror" really split the ship into separate timelines, many of them much darker than the main timeline, "Shattered" examined several eras from Voyager's past and possible future. Given the multiverse of Star Trek that Prodigy season 2 emphasizes, this change made a lot of sense for the episode.
The Part the Multiverse Plays in "Cracked Mirror"
Reintroducing Wesley Crusher to help explain the several timelines and the Travelers' roles in safeguarding the multiverse, Prodigy season 2 explored the multiverse more explicitly than any previous Star Trek project.
Significance of Captain Chakotay in both episodes
One other notable resemblance between the two episodes was that both included Captain Chakotay, among the few individuals able to cross between worlds. Although "Cracked Mirror" also concentrated on Prodigy's young cast, Chakotay still played a major part in the episode. "Shattered" put Chakotay clearly in the role of the main character. Chakotay even cited "Shattered" during the events of "Cracked Mirror," saying "I've been through something like this before," when debating what to do next after the group discovered they were imprisoned in a parallel universe.
How Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Enhanced Voyager's "Shattered" Premise
The changes Prodigy made to "Shattered's" premise actually helped enhance Prodigy's rendition of the episode, instead of a straight remake. For Voyager, focusing just on several eras made sense; but, Prodigy's exploration of distinct eras helped "Cracked Mirror" become an action-packed episode devoid of a slow moment. It also let Star Trek: Prodigy investigate some incredible callback and links to the larger Star Trek timeline, including the Mirror Universe—which Voyager never got to show and the return of the Enderprizians from season 1. These all contributed to make "Cracked Mirror" a better episode.
Star Trek: Prodigy's Chakotay Emphasize
The comeback of Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), a main member of Voyager's cast of characters and the Uss Voyager's former First Officer, is one of the main points of contact between Prodigy and Voyager. With an eye toward finding Chakotay, Prodigy season 2 worked hard to improve his character relative to Voyager. One unexpected way Prodigy showed its connection was in the remake of a Chakotay-centric Voyager episode in season 2, one in which Prodigy greatly enhanced the general plot.
