Squid Game has become one of the most watched series and is a cultural phenomenon on Netflix . Its themes of class differences mixed with suspenseful games created a captivating show. There has been much discussion regarding "Squid Game" particularly since its second season release which is followed by the confirmation that season three is on the horizon.
The release of Squid Game season two gained large popularity and is currently the highest television debut on Netflix in its first eleven days with 126.2 million views. Even with that large increase in viewings it has not completely replicated the same surge in social and media attention compared to the original season. It also showcases a dedicated fanbase and a testament for Netflix to invest in quality projects with global appeal.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that there is a third season and that the third season will serve as the conclusion of the main series. There are however other plans to continue expanding this universe with a spin off series coming at some point in time. In order to provide consistency season 3 has been filmed back-to-back with the previous season. It will arrive at a much quicker pace to make it readily available for viewership.
A teaser video on the Netflix Korea YouTube Channel initially revealed June 27, 2025 as a potential launch date, but that video has since been removed causing much fan speculation about its meaning. There has yet to be an official confirmation from Netflix of this release date and it currently serves as an idea for those following its creation.
The series revolves around Seong Gi-hun as his original character became iconic for the story lines presented. The narrative focuses on high stakes survival situations that explores Gi-hun’s quest against the Front Man and the underlying moral complexity of humanity.
Creator Dong-hyuk has explained that the goal is to bring closure to Gi-hun's character making season 3 the last one for that arc. The series has a heavy impact on commentary regarding class disparity as a foundation for his inspiration to showcase these stories. If there was an opportunity in the future the show would most likely focus on new characters as this is his approach to continuing its storyline.
In Season 2, Lee Byung-hun takes on a more prominent role, delving into the layered past of the Front Man, who goes back into the game as Player 001. It shows many elements into his personal connection with Gi-hun’s ideals and why he returns as well as explores the psychological challenges of a former decorated police officer who becomes ruthless. This exploration also created opportunity for many different sides of human interactions, personal views and the choices people make when their own morality is challenged.
Viewers are given multiple views of his persona which shows how difficult it has become for him to navigate being the man he once was, along with a new form of personality as he also plays the role as an in game character. He struggles with how different personalities intersect with what his original motives and beliefs are. With each identity his core character is pulled in different directions making a constant shift as those two sides try to connect or fail.
As a whole, the different view points presented creates many interesting layers in the story. Both Innie and Outie personas are highlighted for each main characters and each viewpoint is shown to have influence with all the core story themes. With this inner conflict characters also develop a new perspective and challenge each other to create a more well-rounded dynamic.
Characters must navigate between what they feel is right or wrong. Decisions are made based off of survival. The new players of the game force previously held characters to look inward and question some long held ideals. They are seen as needing to compromise parts of their core selves.
Many of the fans for the show have taken their personal theories online while responding to both official releases and accidents that have taken place as news leaked for upcoming episodes and information. Through multiple outlets online, comments and speculation have helped in raising conversation which has assisted in growing excitement for the series as well as more understanding for key factors in it’s creative design.
A photo which was thought to contain a spoiler was released of a former character returning who was previously considered dead. While there was not full confirmation fans immediately took to theorizing that some may not have seen their end yet on the show. The use of online tools and social media made the story gain quick and expansive reactions.
While the core story of Gi-hun will end in season three the show runners have left the possibility open to different perspectives being presented from new locations, events, and characters. Such a style may focus on those outside of the known story.
Director Dong-hyuk has suggested exploring the backstories of characters such as the masked guards. Such characters may help viewers to see a brand new take on their unique roles within that complex society while allowing more focus into aspects outside of the established story.
There is an intent to create engaging stories while keeping momentum for each season's content. Even though the streaming platform provides access on a more readily available scale, it will have to manage expectations while providing the correct pacing for every series it presents. They strive to show value for those tuning in while still making great quality products for viewers to choose from.
