Solar Opposites Halloween Special 2: Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch Spill the Spooky Secrets!
Get ready for some seriously spooky laughs! Hulu's Solar Opposites delivers another wild ride with The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October. This hilarious sequel follows Korvo and Terry (voiced by Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch), as they try (and fail!) to elevate their social status; culminating in a crazy adventure involving Halloween itself; it totally escalates into a war over holiday dominance which changes these characters and generates some hilariously surprising revelations. Created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks), this adult animated series about an alien family adapting to life on Earth has been a big hit with its unique mix of humor, sci-fi and totally unexpected surprises!
Picking up from the first Halloween special, Terry and Korvo try to impress this country club. They end up unleashing an ancient curse (thanks to the return of the Great Pumpkin from the earlier special and various other Halloween elements)! This results in their family transforming into various spooky creatures. It's insane, creative and wonderfully animated!
We had the amazing opportunity to chat with Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch. We were talking about this new special. Stevens revealed his prep work for Korvo's return in this spooky sequel which also brought forward a surprising number of insights: His need for large quantities of caffeine, especially when delivering lines; those intense scenes which needed incredible levels of fast pacing during that whole production experience! The rapid-fire dialogue is a defining characteristic of this unique animated show.
Here is exactly what he said: "Yeah, it was bonkers. I had to clue up on what had happened last time around. But yeah, it was great fun."It is completely crazy that Stevens needed this extra level of assistance but this helps us better understand the intense creative and collaborative process that goes into this crazy production environment. He mentioned something completely necessary: "It's pretty high octane, and I've found that it helps if I go to the sessions heavily caffeinated and just ready to just hit the ground running very fast."
Thomas Middleditch talks about Terry’s transformation, his initial positive reactions toward becoming a ghost and that moment when everything changes and makes the changes very negatively impacting and surprisingly serious: “Well, with most things he sees, he probably starts out as, "This is great!" and then realizes it's bad. [Laughs] He's like, "Looks like the Solar-Opposites are ghosts, baby!" And then realizes it stinks, and he wants to be real, so he can bump mounds with his new husband. I just love that he's always quick to celebrate the monkey's paw situation.”This insight perfectly encapsulates that chaotic optimism ofTerrythat truly highlights that unique style found within this animated show.
He later also gave several additional creative inputs about future ideas involving holidays, this insight perfectly displays that unique blend of chaos and unexpected creativity found in this series. His suggestions include: April Fools’ Day (it would work amazingly!), Daylight Appreciation Day (seriously?), and even National Lobster Day!
We talked holiday war potential! This is totally central to this animated series. And with additional specials likely in the future, we talked with those actors concerning future storylines.
Dan Stevens wanted National Donut Day versus a holiday Thomas Middleditch needed to verify with his vast "data center" (apparently his phones’ list). This generated another creative exchange with other food holidays and resultingly: National Fried Chicken Day was added, showing yet another insight into just how creative and collaborative those sessions can really become; creating moments like the "chicken-fried donut freak monster".
Given the appearance of the Monsterverse itself within the production, which showcases the various characters within that particular franchise; we thought about those actors possibly being featured in some new MonsterVerse crossover movies. This topic generated both Stevens andMiddleditch’sunanimous agreement: An absolute yes! They both suggested contactingLegendaryfor making this become a reality, generating an equally hilarious discussion regarding how to overcomeKongandGodzilla’s threats (the key suggestion? ThatChicken Fried Donutfreak monster which these characters might have some expertise using!), showcasing once more just how deeply hilarious and uniquely creative this series actually is. The thought of this potential crossover makes those viewers anticipating it much more thrilled, especially the unique moments and potential crossover storylines.
