“Skeleton Crew” is a Star Wars series with a coming-of-age story that features a group of kids trying to find their way home through their adventures with Jude Law’s quick witted space pirate. It blends elements from multiple concepts within the “Star Wars” universe.
The series follows four young protagonists who become lost in the galaxy. While attempting to return home these kids face many dangers, mysteries while also finding comradery. The show is also inspired by similar 1980’s adventure stories that have included elements of comradery along with the unknown.
The show showcases unique growth and changes in each character along the journey with lessons in friendships and courage being brought to life on the screen. As they grow their perspectives also evolve during their quest back home through varioUS obstacles.
The reception to “Skeleton Crew” has been overall positive by fans and critics with praise to character development and it’s throwback theme to family friendly stories. Despite that the viewership on Disney+ in the US was the lowest for all “Star Wars” TV debuts showing that maybe marketing was not sufficient.
Nielsen data showed that the series did not reach the Top 10 streaming list with a low 384 minutes watched for all episodes during the week they were made available, making this debut lower than all other previous shows. The information on all streaming hours in regions outside the U.S. is still unknown and that may be where the highest numbers for viewership are, while also showing the show itself still was well regarded.
The creators of “Skeleton Crew” have said they wish to create a second season to allow the growth of the show's younger characters and see them adapt more to the galaxy. However they did aim for the story of the series to be self conclusive in case their wish is not fulfilled.
Creators are open to a potential second season where they show how the characters find their place in the galaxy. While it is not a done deal they continue to dream of how these storylines can progress while keeping in mind what made the first season well received by its fanbase.
Given the lower view count in the initial releases , Disney has not made any plans known regarding a potential Season 2. Many sources note that past projects that did not reach expectations for viewers are also on the chopping block creating unease for fans to expect that another installment will be green lit in the near future.
“Skeleton Crew” embraces concepts of comradery adventure and a sci-fi theme creating a familiar format with a new approach to storyline. The show emphasizes heart and real human connections even when all elements that surrounds the characters is of a made up galaxy.
This mix of styles and unique characters sets the series apart with what has been seen in all previous forms of media for the brand. By mixing familiar settings with a completely new tone is what gives the show it’s distinctive quality that people may not find within previous titles.
The show is one of many different forms of projects within the "Star Wars" world. By having so many ongoing different shows in line there have been challenges with keeping a wide range of focus from the viewers on a single program or concept.
Other shows such as “The Acolyte” generated an increased number of public conversations. This brought both controversy and conversation but that also gave them more screen time than was provided for "Skeleton Crew." The lack of media coverage for “Skeleton Crew” could of been part of why more were not aware of its release to stream or create buzz.
