Silo, an Apple TV+ series, is based on the book series by Hugh Howey and dives into the mystery of a vast underground bunker. The series follows the characters who are in search of answers about their origin story as well as exploring issues that the society of Silo face.
The plot revolves around a silo with an immense depth which shields 10,000 people. Many people believe the bunker is a shelter from an outside world that is not suitable to life. Each member of this group questions how they arrived, the purpose for the Silo and what they have been taught all along. It highlights how complex and detailed life has become while being stuck in one confined space.
The season 2 finale, "Into the Fire," presents high-stakes tension, action and a major turn of events. The finale focuses on character stories such as Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) and Bernard (Tim Robbins), their individual development and the events that will directly impact their character.
Juliette, the former sheriff who left the silo in the previous season is back. Her intention was to warn about danger outside, only to find the truth of how devastating the outside would be to anyone coming in. When entering she must fight through the dangers that remain. This marks an important turn in how much change her character has achieved.
Bernard is presented in a completely new light with his nihilistic mindset by this point in the story he has taken off any previous leader style approach and simply accepts defeat as he knows it is the only thing awaiting him. He engages in one last argument with Juliette before going in the path of fire showcasing him also trying to embrace death by a means of no control over his existence. These two events change how both of them will move into the next chapter.
Flashbacks that went back hundreds of years shows how people of the modern day may be linked to this silo’s timeline. The new characters Helen a reporter and a Congressman Daniel all play a role before the existence of the Silo structure even existed creating a link from the before to what is now.
The show revealed the cause for humanity going below the surface, is connected with rumors of a radiological attack in the U.S.. It seems they are directly tied to those who created these structures using past circumstances that changed everything. This all links back to specific items that would previously seen as important "relics" from a time unknown.
The finale was packed with philosophical quandaries and social issues using allegorical concepts for exploration. One that has shown through prominently throughout was questions regarding trust in leaders and other governing bodies within this society.
The safeguard was a major part of the episode with new information. This method shows how the structure of silos is not what everyone was lead to believe as it allows those with power to have a kill switch if necessary for any that choose to become rebellious or take power.
The show introduces the Algorithm's that not only speaks through an unembodied voice but dictates who has control of certain spaces in their confined reality. It is noted as the entity choosing who should have power among the population. Robert Sims and his son are no longer a desired influence as the "Algorithm" has moved to place the focus of leadership on Camille showing a power shift that may come to pass as she is viewed as more capable for a higher status.
Silo was renewed for two additional seasons. All storylines may lead to more answers about what caused humanity to seek shelter as well as their past lives, exploring deeper themes and questions about control. As all aspects slowly merge a sense of what the real objective is should be coming to view with its answers.
Season 3 will explore not only Silo 18 but that of Silo 17 revealing the truth behind the many people who are out there after a supposed “clean” process. With new and old storylines blending there will be an integration between those who currently hold power to those with their past life view making it an interesting combination for the shows upcoming installment. It also sets out to discover what was the result for those who ventured outside in season one.
