Sherlock Season 5: Will Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman Return?

One of the biggest television series' that have captivated audiences for a long time was Sherlock, a modern reimagining of a timeless tale, featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. And after some time away it is time to ask a question... Could a new season be in the making?

Sherlock Season 5 - Will It Happen?

It's still an exciting idea! It would truly be amazing, especially considering that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, as Sherlock and John Watson. It looks like Arthur Conan O'Doyle, the writer of Sherlock's original tales, is keeping quiet! You know, Season 4 had some big problems, so for some people, that may be the end!

The BBC is behind the series! In 2017 a big drop in ratings came about as a consequence of all those problems in Season 4 which had only a 54% rating compared to other earlier, successful seasons. It seems that all that wasn't what fans were hoping for. Some feel it is all that the show will have to offer but if it comes back, fans are going to get one final, spectacular performance for those who enjoy this duo. It's hard to tell!

What Went Wrong in Season 4?

Sherlock's first two seasons, gave viewers something they really loved! There are still huge, powerful fans for these two amazing stars as they make some incredible performances!

The third season and particularly "The Final Problem," seemed like a truly intense conclusion.

They had so much anticipation because it seemed the series really had to figure out why Moriarty (Andrew Scott) made a triumphant, incredible return after he'd seemed to be dead, a twist that brought out such a deep sense of suspense and excitement.
The creators brought in a really controversial storyline in Season 4. The series created a new figure: Eurus, a character who came from the mind of Sherlock Holmes. That element made a major mark and disrupted the narrative and seemed very confusing.

What A Fifth Season Could Do

You could consider it a redo. The series needs to correct some mistakes, especially with the plot from "The Final Problem". As the conclusion of the show, it's clear the series didn't reach a full close as some feel it did.

What that might allow the creators to do is re-examine their strategy around how Sherlock's sister entered the story. There were quite a few issues.
You see, Season 5, it could go down a really unique path and perhaps bring an exciting storyline!

Sherlock- A New Path:

A new set of Sherlock Holmes stories, for the modern world that fans could enjoy in a new season!

There are lots of stories to go through and Season 5, may include the new possibilities with one of the original, canonical stories.
Fans love the series that brings in some classic themes with the long run of these tales but there may be room for a few additional stories for Sherlock.

Should There Be More Seasons?

While the possibility exists, that is something we should consider. If Sherlock came back for a few seasons, this might not be such a good idea as these past few seasons may have created some real issues in the storylines.

The possibility of one season, or maybe one episode, would be great as Sherlock continues to develop and evolve!

As some fans have pointed to a special episode that made it big- "The Abominable Bride!"

While it's unclear whether or not a new Sherlock show is being produced. The chance to see Sherlock, Dr. John Watson and the amazing stories they will share. Sherlock and Dr. Watson could easily come back to bring another powerful set of cases! A truly exciting, new journey that fans would cherish forever!
