Gregory Alpert, the location manager, found the perfect spot for Wind Gap: Barnesville, Georgia (as revealed in Vulture)! The team originally found this spot not as amazing – that original attempt described the town as "too cutesy," failing to capture the right eerie undertone; something found later after a significant road trip had occurred. However, it unexpectedly worked after having spent time exploring more rural, yet interesting parts of Georgia – all of which were noted in their original explorations when deciding what to do next, ultimately creating the incredibly evocative atmosphere for Wind Gap which completely impacted this otherwise-typical miniseries in such significant and lasting ways. As noted in the Wichita Eagle interview with Flynn – Wind Gap was always rather vague, inspired by various real locations; with her explicit comment being, "It [Wind Gap] was largely imaginary. It's not based on any particular town. But I knew I wanted [Wind Gap] to be a town of violence that Camille grew up in." This meant Alpert and others had incredible flexibility in selection; generating unique opportunities.

Barnesville officials cooperated; and local businesses got compensation for any disruptions during shooting! The filming took two days in St. Louis, MO; fifteen days in GA; ten in Northern CA; and sixty-six in Southern CA, which gives another creative angle that those responsible for making such a show would not shy away from completely diversifying locations. Adora Crellin’s home, that Crellin Estate, also required a massive hunt for an appropriate location. Vallée wanted a place “where a scream would go unheard,” a place incredibly isolated yet profoundly intimidating— another detail that is a key element for understanding the larger story arcs found within the entirety of Sharp Objects; making these locations far more than simply the backdrop–but actually deeply significant contributions towards capturing those intense feelings.

Alpert searched Los Angeles – but found nothing. A photo from the Mendocino County Film Commission changed everything – displaying an incredible $6.2 million home in Redwood Valley, CA. That location immediately satisfied those responsible. It had a particular ambiance – “an epiphany moment”— Alpert’s words. That’s big for a location manager!

Yet that required work too. They needed changes—switching paint color (from yellow to blue), building fences and altering gardens, generating a Midwest ambiance—and creating those perfect interior sets in Los Angeles to create that key impression! The sheer amount of planning involved demonstrates the enormous creative commitment behind Sharp Objects!
