Ryan Eggold: From New Amsterdam Hero to Law & Order Villain – A Smart Career Move?

Ryan Eggold: From New Amsterdam's Hero to Law & Order's Shady Brother – A Career-Boosting Role Flip!

Ryan Eggold's Law & Order Guest Spot: A Total 180 From Max Goodwin!

Ryan Eggold is mostly known for playing the compassionate Dr. Max Goodwin in New Amsterdam.  But his recent guest appearance on Law & Order was totally different!  It showcased this immensely talented actor portraying something utterly different than what many people expect! And those differences are really worth analyzing; considering how important his new role actually was and those consequences this has for his future. Law & Order is famous for casting unexpected actors in interesting roles—often having heroes play villains! Eggold’s character Matt Riley wasn't a pure villain. He was however, way darker and far more morally complicated than Goodwin.

Eggold has some roles since New Amsterdam ended; but his Goodwin role overshadows everything!   He is mostly recognized as that compassionate doctor; a dedicated activist pushing back against systemic issues.   That role helped cement his name but created a certain kind of expectation surrounding his capabilities; an important moment considering that such highly defined types might affect the perception that casting directors could otherwise have; and ultimately what this specific choice implied regarding what this means for the actor's future.

A Stark Contrast: Matt Riley vs. Max Goodwin

Eggold's Matt Riley in Law & Order (season 24, episode 3) is Vince Riley's (Reid Scott) troubled younger brother; an absolute contrast with GoodwinMatt is shady—caught with guns, constantly making excuses, totally incapable of admitting responsibility!  His dishonesty and selfishness are worlds away from Goodwin’s selflessness! It demonstrates his ability to completely and seamlessly switch into other roles and those shifts themselves demonstrate the incredible ability to adapt in very diverse settings.

This contrast gets clearer as the Law & Order episode continues: Matt constantly offers deals—snitching to get charges dropped, only to change his mind. He manipulates the detectives.  That creates a brilliant tension. Everyone's aware he's playing games—yet, they are continually taken advantage of, creating moments which become more memorable and demonstrate those specific themes and situations which were completely successful and helped cement this episode's importance.

Why Eggold Needed This Role After New Amsterdam

Playing the same hero character for five years creates a really strong image for actors! It helps cement their name, creates fame—but makes it hard to get other, diverse types of parts! This kind of highly publicized and incredibly easily available and frequent roles might sometimes be the problem. Taking a quasi-villain role in a highly viewed show like Law & Order was brilliantly smart.

It gets more specific:  Appearing in Law & Order, as something entirely opposite—demonstrates his acting range and breaks away from that hero type!   It's also a top show; massive exposure for Eggold, helping break free and helping open countless doors to create other avenues.
