Is Kemen Secretly the Mouth of Sauron? A Rings of Power Theory!
Kemen, the son of the power-hungry Pharazôn in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, seems destined for darkness. His mom's prophecy ("ill ends") and his own actions point toward a sinister future! Now, a crazy fan theory suggests he could become one of Sauron's most memorable minions—the infamous Mouth of Sauron!
Many of Sauron's followers in the Third Age were once mortals. Rings of Power can really take creative liberties because of this history, it connects the series's original characters (like Kemen) to Tolkien's classic characters and lore; creating compelling connections which would surprise audience members.
Kemen's family background screams doom! His connection to Pharazôn, that seriously awful Númenor king, isn't a good sign. And his own actions, particularly in Rings of Power season 2, highlight that he is pretty bad. This created several theories—that this terrible son could become one of those key characters who was largely unknown before appearing in such major, intense confrontations. The particular one presented here has great plausibility!
One critical element was the prophecy of doom at Kemen’s birth! While Númenor's destruction by that massive wave is bad—Kemen’s mom's words (“ill ends”) suggest something worse and that is personal, specifically directed towards the specific fate of Kemen, which contrasts the larger impending disaster to his family. The implied importance suggests he’ll be involved in other, more personalized forms of drama later on. One possible connection could link directly into another important storyline within the Rings of Power itself. And a well-known theory suggests that he might just become a Ringwraith; that could be very likely.
The Mouth of Sauron was Sauron's spokesperson at the Black Gate (seen in the extended Lord of the Rings movies); the primary liaison in the final confrontation leading to Sauron’s defeat and shows exactly what he's capable of! The theory proposes Kemen as that very same character. This makes the story rather interesting and surprising for the audiences because the Mouth’s canon suggests he is just a Black Númenórean (a survivor who wasn’t killed after that great cataclysmic event involving Númenor's destruction); not particularly magical, but with a rather long life.
That's the conundrum, friends! Kemen, as a High Man, lives longer than other mortals; it still isn't quite enough to reach that point at Sauron's service in that Third Age! But Rings of Power could definitely solve that by employing sorcery!
Even though timelines don't totally match, this theory is really persuasive and demonstrates its importance through the narrative in Rings of Power. Kemen lacks that powerful military background; he isn't the main kind of warrior figure in Rings of Power. That moment stabbing Valandil (but only after Valandil surrenders, showcases exactly that: cowardly, deceitful.
That key aspect demonstrates Kemen's effectiveness: using the influence provided to him, his main role as mouthpiece to his father. That power’s entirely borrowed from his masters. He only repeats commands. The Mouth of Sauron did exactly this! So that storyline is surprisingly apt; creating a strangely appropriate substitution which reinterprets a well-known storyline element with creative methods.
The next few seasons must confirm Kemen's "ill end" (and if it connects to that notorious Mouth of Sauron). Kemen has authority after the events depicted in Season 2 and those acts are getting increasingly worse. A likely and critically important step here involves him meeting Sauron; creating that opportunity for Sauron to use this terrible character to accomplish his goal; convincing Kemen to manipulate and work against Pharazôn. Considering the tensions in the Rings of Power this could actually be entirely credible!
That Mouth of Sauron theory for Kemen is incredibly compelling! The seemingly disconnected aspects from different elements within those series is where this surprising connection really makes sense, bringing together various narrative elements to construct that unexpected revelation that adds another element of excitement to an already complex and highly nuanced show. Even those minor aspects around those individual characters like Kemen’s own role become further understood and provides significant contextual value towards a character’s later arc! We’ll see if those next seasons confirm it!
