Otto Hightower's House of the Dragon Season 3 Fate
We're about to see a huge change for Otto Hightower in season 3 of House Of The Dragon. And no, it's not about becoming King, because that's a very different, much sadder story than he could have imagined! Otto might be getting a little payback for his long history of scheming, betrayals, and just wanting power for the Hightowers!
Think about what happened in the finale. Aegon was totally not cool with Otto as Hand of the King, so he swapped him for that tough guy, Criston Cole. After getting the axe from Aegon's reign, Otto decided it was time to plan for the future - heading back to Oldtown to be the guide to his grand-kid, Daeron. But no! Instead, we got the biggest plot twist when the episode ended showing Otto trapped in some random dungeon, a far cry from what his destiny could've been! So yeah, getting sent to the dungeon? It's pretty brutal considering that was where things left off!
Why Does Otto’s Fate in House of the Dragon Matter?
Otto wasn't just the bad guy. He’s part of the backbone of a powerful family with a whole lot of drama surrounding him! And while Otto's fate hasn't been clearly detailed in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood (that super intense book detailing the Targaryens!), it's clear from Season 3's sneak peek that it's gonna be intense! Now, as far as the storyline goes, Otto was kind of a key mover when it came to setting in motion the Greens' claim to the Iron Throne, and if you remember how hard things went down in that last season - those weren't just words! In this whole Dance of the Dragons mess, Otto played a big part in trying to secure that crown!
In the House Of The Dragon series, they kept this storyline about Otto going. It wasn't all happy families with Otto, it was actually him putting into motion what a lot of the Green Team’s goals were. The show has shown how those two sides are not exactly hugging it out – Team Black and Team Green are fighting hard, which makes everything involving Otto feel very important!
The Execution: When a Father’s Plan Goes Wrong
It looks like Otto might be going the way of the traitor - we're thinking that maybe Queen Rhaenyra might have a "beheading" order in mind. The "Fire & Blood" storyline points to it. Remember, that's the main event for when those who fought against Rhaenyra finally get dealt a heavy blow by Team Black? Otto will be the first! We're also hearing that other baddies in Team Green, like Lord Stokeworth and Lord Rosby, will meet the same fate, along with some others who flipped sides. Alicent? Yeah, she probably isn’t gonna be happy about any of this.
This is pretty much a big event, the beginning of payback! Otto, as Rhaenyra will surely declare, had been actively working against her to support Aegon. In the show’s storyline, that’s probably the time when Rhaenyra comes back into King’s Landing after all those fights with dragons. The biggest thing for a lot of viewers will be, how many episodes will we get until we see this big shift! Will it happen right at the start of season 3 or maybe later?
Who Is Holding Otto, and Where Are They Keeping Him?
So, if you've seen that season finale, it’s clear they tossed Otto into a dungeon, but that's pretty much it. And it’s totally driving the internet crazy! We want the deets: Is Otto hiding in the dungeons of the Red Keep, where maybe Team Green doesn’t even know about it?! We think it's a really interesting idea. It wouldn't be surprising if that's how Larys is doing it for power - or maybe as some big "stop that pesky grand-dad from being a pest” thing!
If he’s not in those dungeons, we know Otto has plans to travel to the Reach and make some deals. The last we hear from “House of the Dragon" was Maester Orwyle mentioning that Otto may have had his travel plans cut short. And if that’s the case, maybe the Beesburys were in on it all, and Otto's going to be handed back over when Rhaenyra comes into the city - all in that crazy Game Of Thrones fashion!
Will Otto Hightower Be Back in Season 3, and What Will Alicent Do?
Well, he's gonna get a rough, sudden ending if the events in "Fire & Blood" match the timeline for Season 3 of "House of the Dragon". We know the storyline is kind of loose about following the books perfectly - we see this when "House of the Dragon" leaves out whole sections of characters and the events around them in Fire & Blood. So the exact way things will play out is unknown.
For those following Alicent’s storyline in “House of the Dragon” , it’s not about how many wins she’ll get, it’s more about how the losses will affect her character. Otto is the second important member of her family that the series will show a pretty dramatic fate for (since they've already shown how Aegon met his demise), and I think we're looking at one heartbroken lady about to experience some pretty extreme grief. The end of Season 2 of "House of the Dragon" is an intense introduction to some truly dramatic stuff that’s going to tear everyone in the story to pieces. Will this happen fast? Who knows? Just a matter of time!
