Netflix's Territory: A Yellowstone Challenger That's Already Winning!
Netflix just dropped a new Western drama, Territory, and it's already causing a stir! This Australian outback epic might just give Yellowstone a run for its money. It’s got that familiar Western feel— family Drama, power struggles, and plenty of action – but with a unique Australian twist! This new Western drama series has some familiar plot elements yet contains enough novel aspects to easily stand on its own and provide unique value to a wider audience; generating immense praise, and showing immense promise early on.
The story follows the Lawson family and those incredibly high stakes around their farm, Marianne Station; and it’s more than just farm life. Rivals – farmers, gangsters, miners and Indigenous leaders – all vie for this amazing, incredibly wealthy plot of land. The series begins after the passing of their patriarch; an incredible and somewhat intense death from a pack of wild dogs, further setting this story within a realm more wild, dangerous, and ruthless; a realistic situation reflecting the brutality inherent in this very harsh and unforgiving environment that most Western titles typically focus upon. The initial success suggests the initial positive critical reviews— currently an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – means that it's got the potential to exceed its predecessors.
Territory is made for Yellowstone fans! Same genre, themes, even those setting similarities make this easy to predict – and incredibly compelling to those viewers familiar with Yellowstone. There are enough differences however that would keep any audience engaged and completely unaware they are watching what is fundamentally just a remake of another series. But how? Let's see! The Lawson family's succession Drama directly mirrors those elements within Yellowstone, particularly concerning the internal family conflicts that ultimately impacts the business and those long-term prospects, all created using similar and relatable experiences and circumstances that those viewers already familiar might anticipate and predict with some confidence and enjoy this element.
territory also does some things better. The Indigenous characters are far more developed than what we’ve seen from the series’ prior productions which adds both immense complexity, depth and important thematic importance that had previously not really been emphasized to the same capacity in those older shows which had attempted something similarly themed; those earlier attempts in this thematic concept failed compared to Territory’s early attempts at improving these storytelling choices; further indicating why this particular approach to developing stories might really work!
It is also worth emphasizing that Territory’s clear storyline: The Lawsons battling for Marianne Station, creates a compelling core focus that was never entirely seen before! Those same points also help resolve those problems around pacing that plagued the prior title that this new show hopes to compete with; suggesting there are creative storytelling solutions that weren’t necessarily made visible prior to its release.
Both shows explore those brutal family dynamics, creating high levels of emotional involvement. Both shows rely on incredibly similar aspects; highlighting the immense family conflicts surrounding both families and the competing ideals involving those different views around the future for that incredibly important business (for the Duttons it's the ranch; for the Lawsons, it's Marianne Station) those similarities create many shared emotional beats.
The core difference lies in scope and storytelling approach. Yellowstone is immense— larger cast, more sprawling story— creating intense but somewhat diffuse feelings; diluting that overall intensity and creating a much slower-paced storyline with vastly different elements and concerns that required resolution, yet this was poorly done in Yellowstone, according to various viewers and some critics. Territory is more contained— creating those tighter narrative choices that lead to incredibly intense events! This might feel claustrophobic for some, but to most; the more focused approach creates intense conflicts which perfectly work; greatly adding additional tension.
It's worth highlighting these extremely contrasting critical viewpoints. Yellowstone’s first season earned 57% on Rotten Tomatoes (audience score: 83%). Territory’s critics’ score? Currently 80%! (Audience score yet to appear). This alone demonstrates that this new Netflix drama series is already surpassing its rival.
That said, Territory might not have the star power. No Kevin Costner! Its Australian setting is less universally relatable for those expecting the American West context. It is an excellent drama series regardless, potentially replacing an older title successfully, especially for viewers who might only appreciate some other facets or aspects not found within its counterpart – suggesting a completely diverse viewership!
Territory is exciting; providing both interesting plots and extremely compelling storylines to follow. It's incredibly different and better than Yellowstone at points! The strong reviews already show why. Although Yellowstone is an immense experience, and provides many satisfying viewing options, this series succeeds in areas its predecessor hadn't attempted to focus upon: More nuanced character development for all types of people; improved pacing which resulted in better narrative choices, those intensified familial conflicts which improved on various prior storylines. So if you crave a brilliant Western, but want a more concentrated experience that keeps you intensely engaged, it’s completely worth your time, viewers!
