Ncis: Origins and Gibbs's Contradictory Farewell: A Look at Mark Harmon's Return
Mark Harmon is back as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the NCIS prequel, Ncis: Origins. This is big news! Fans are excited—it’s been a while! However, this comeback creates a really big problem. Harmon’s appearance contradicts something huge from Ncis season 19. So get ready, this article discusses the details surrounding Gibbs’s retirement! For those wanting to avoid spoilers – stop here, and come back later!
Harmon's return in NCIS: Origins is particularly important, considering that NCIS ended with Harmon's departure, so getting another chance to revisit the beloved Gibbs is something which the viewers want, for better or for worse. NCIS: Origins uses Austin Stowell as a younger Gibbs; Mark Harmon narrates (as an older Gibbs); and makes appearances. This all focuses on the early 1990s and shows the beginnings of his NCIS career at NIS. This approach however also created immense contradictions within established continuity.
That final scene in NCIS Season 19, "Great Wide Open" is particularly important because this is the final farewell between Gibbs and McGee (the two remaining original NCIS team members): Gibbs, retired and fishing in Alaska; telling McGee that he's finally at peace— this wasn’t something temporary – this peace was established as having finally been established after decades of unresolved grief over his late wife and daughter. He explains he's found a peace previously unavailable.
"Whatever I am feeling... this-this sense of peace... I-I have not had this since Shannon and Kelly died. And I'm not ready to let it go."
This powerful moment establishes his closure, solidifying his reasons for retiring and this established a sense of well-deserved and long-awaited closure; making the eventual return of Gibbs incredibly difficult and questionable for many people involved!
But NCIS: Origins throws a wrench. We see that older Gibbs, in Alaska; writing in his journal by a fire, narrating those flashbacks in that early career – which depicts those intense and ongoing struggles with the past, revisiting some of those events with added emotion through that somber narration.
This contradiction, this conflict and direct reversal creates that key plot problem and throws previous episodes’ meanings into considerable doubt, generating those kind of inconsistencies within existing established continuity!
NCIS: Origins reveals much of Gibbs's regrets; most painfully highlighting a single aspect. That conversation around ignoring his "gut feelings" when saying goodbye to his wife and daughter, is just absolutely haunting and memorable. This reveals far more intense lingering emotional trauma—not completely related to that moment and makes many viewers consider just why those actions and decisions created lasting problems, yet creates something intensely human.
That somber tone in NCIS: Origins implies this is merely the starting point; revealing that these are only hints at further emotional complexities to be revealed. Is the intense grief connected to solitude in Alaska?
Gibbs’s relationship with those surrounding him is immensely valuable; it demonstrates that a huge emotional and supporting cast of individuals (the NCIS team is family after all) helped manage that intense pain; generating far more important relationships for those to help manage that extreme and incredibly personal emotional baggage – now left to be carried mostly alone, without the added support to help manage his problems.
NCIS: Origins is a great show, yet those issues and this incredibly important, questionable choice concerning how Gibbs’s actions contradict established events in earlier shows created huge tension for continuity and established plot aspects! That supposedly “found peace” established during the ending is completely flipped by revisiting Gibbs's painful past, creating massive story potential that both strengthens and adds layers.
The contradiction is powerful. We now recognize that Gibbs might have needed more help, those very obvious lingering pains in his later years need a focus. Those lingering questions created by the contrasting portrayal might create much more intrigue; leaving fans anticipating this complex emotional and storytelling approach to revisit those early elements, especially concerning his early career, for much more satisfying emotional conclusions!
