Season 5 brings a surprising change. Stuart Martin (The Duke) won't be back; yet Kate Phillips (Eliza Scarlet) will still star.  His departure isn't completely unanticipated given previous events, but it’s still surprisingly big; showing just how big the character truly is within the storyline and it affects many aspects; leaving that long anticipated and generally hoped for continuation of Eliza and William's relationship as completely undecided. The new Scotland Yard detective is Tom Durant Pritchard (as Alexander Blake), meaning we will see what happens after his departure and how Eliza's own interactions change with this new cast member, after William leaves the show. The name change to just Miss Scarlet further underscores that major plot event.

The full cast also includes Evan McCabe, Cathy BeltonFelix ScottPaul BazelySimon Ludders, and Tim Chipping reprising their roles. The core ensemble will all return; with new additions to shake things up considerably.

Miss Scarlet Season 5's Plot: What to Expect

Season 4 left some serious cliffhangers which really sets this next installment as important.  Eliza gets that big promotion at Nash & Sons.   William confesses his love! They temporarily split at the ending due to his leaving but the next season makes no mention about what had already been said between them–which could mean there is hope, even considering his sudden and permanent departure.

The synopsis from PBS is exciting, but also frustrating:

"Eliza's agency is booming; and her work has been extremely successful and professional aspects have only expanded. But Duke (William) has left, and his continued absence in New York creates the inevitable crisis where Eliza is forced to make hard decisions. A new detective enters the Scotland Yard scene:  Eliza's got to work with Alexander Blake if she wants that police access. This all leads to a compelling question for many of its audiences; can Eliza possibly get the balance that everyone needs between her career and relationships. A key question that highlights the difficulty in managing so much; especially after several very important interpersonal and personal conflicts had already concluded previously!

This does seemingly kill any possibility of revisiting those developments relating to Eliza and William's relationship; this removes that important part, showing that just using that long established emotional investment was insufficient for a newer creative opportunity.

Miss Scarlet season 5 brings many changes which many have found to be extremely interesting and somewhat concerning; it's the potential demise of a very important long-term romantic relationship in the story; however the writers found another equally effective plot element that would substitute and create another engaging storyline in the season without that other necessary storyline involving those kinds of interpersonal romantic feelings between William and Eliza.

Even without the Duke, that Victorian world of mystery still has so much potential! The series finale does however create one open question which remains completely unresolved by this announced information, with early release possibilities made for subscribers who could access it earlier; there's something here for both dedicated fans; those audiences newly introduced to this fantastic show. A massive mystery unfolds.
