Special Ops: Lioness – The A-List Cast That Made a Paramount+ Hit

Special Ops: Lioness is a major hit for Paramount+!  This spy thriller, from Taylor Sheridan (the mastermind behind Yellowstone), is totally packed with huge stars. We’re talking Academy Award winners and actors who appeared in several top-grossing movies!  This crazy mix made it a big summer hit (despite some mixed reviews!). And guess what? Season 2 is coming in October 2024!

This whole series is based on a real, but now defunct CIA program. The show revolves around female operatives infiltrating terrorist groups, using incredible skillsets and an interesting mix of plots and narratives; which showcases just how deeply nuanced these relationships can become and that these characters don’t just have specific professional roles and have extremely varied personal experiences and family relationships. And even this new production continues to focus on many strong female protagonists, which was the primary focal point during season 1.

Laysla De Oliveira as Cruz Manuelos: The First Lioness

Laysla De Oliveira started modeling as a teen, and is now an increasingly valuable actress in Hollywood, earning the role as Echo/Dodge in Locke & Key (Netflix) to earning her place in Lioness!  This is Cruz Manuelos - the Marine recruited for Lioness; this character’s incredible determination comes through despite suffering various forms of emotional trauma from abuse, emphasizing why the intensity in that specific storyline matters and makes Cruz even more compelling.

Dave Annable as Neal McNamara: The Supportive Husband (but for how long?)

Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) plays Neal McNamaraJoe's husband, a pediatric surgeon! That added level of career intensity makes for this interesting dynamic— this professional and also very important personal aspect adds another complex layer into this already interesting and well-written character. And that adds some intense strain, both professionally, personally and ultimately their entire relationship becomes significantly changed after this specific character and his relationship evolves within Season 1’s storylines and arc.

Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn Meade: The CIA’s Mastermind

This woman’s a legend, a five-time Oscar nominee and the star of this highly popular and massively successful show.    Kidman’s role?  Kaitlyn Meade, a top-level CIA official, that amazing advisor and confidant  to Joe and one of the better mentors that Joe ever had. This very professional woman has significant moments of deep friendship shown toward Joe. This helps create and reinforce Meade’s character in a specific way and generates this emotional connection; which really builds character depth through this unique perspective.

Morgan Freeman as Edwin Mullins: The Powerful Secretary of State

The one and only Morgan Freeman brings all the gravitas for this powerful character; adding tremendous impact upon the storyline that directly involves the series and Mullins’ impact; his position as the Secretary of State connects Lioness to even higher levels within the political and bureaucratic framework that already underpins everything from Season 1’s development onward.
