Law & Order SVU has always had complex characters. Recently the focus has been on ADA Sonny Carisi who experienced trauma and how it is affecting his abilities. The show continues to navigate these serious topics as a form of drama in a world with new rules.
The shows mid season finale had seen Carisi in a hostage situation. When the show picks back up it will be exploring how the trauma of this event is having on his well-being and affecting both his professional and personal lives. The emotional depth being expressed shows he has a lot of personal challenges in addition to his work challenges.
Carisi's current experience is showcasing how his character has a lack of meaning which is leaving him with no real sense of direction. His emotional struggle in navigating the after effects makes for an interesting set of challenges and growth of that character's experiences. His ability to perform the day to day is greatly affected with his emotions bleeding into all forms of communication.
While dealing with his emotional state “First Light” will have him handle a case about betrayal and lies where there is a woman dealing with missing memories along with their cases which intertwine with Carisi's emotional state as well as issues regarding another suspect changing his plea in court.
His previous mindset of being one of logic is challenged. As the suspect tries to change his plea in court it increases his feelings of anger and lack of control within the justice system.
His closest peers such as Detective Amanda Rollins and Captain Olivia Benson are becoming major factors in showing new dynamics within how their friendship now has to change. Each will respond uniquely due to their own personal perspective on the issue while attempting to give assistance and maintain order in their workplace.
His at home life with Rollins is giving new insights. She has past experiences with high levels of drama and emotional experiences and can provide empathy to navigate Carisi through all that he is working to understand. Her understanding and patience are needed now to ensure support while being given room when needed.
Olivia Benson has to try to balance her need as a friend to Carisi while making sure as a Captain she keeps the professional aspect in check to keep the team organized. This creates her approach to both help and encourage him but keep the department safe during times when he is still working through his struggles. She recognizes the fine balance that must occur with all that he is enduring.
With the series becoming as diverse as it is it is giving the opportunity for Carisi to cross paths with characters such as Law & Order’s Nicholas Baxter showing the interaction among both people in law from both the law enforcement and judicial approach while on their shared cases.
Carisi also appears on the Organized Crime where his dynamic with Stabler is also uniquely formed by what can appear to be one bringing up issues in the cases to where the others jump in and act upon their ideas. He views his role there in an unconventional way as if he is a problem bringer but his importance and point of view are highly noted.
The events of the hostage crisis and other issues along his journey create an obvious challenge. The change he faces does make him go in a state of conflict between the procedural part of his career and the emotionally driven aspect in all his new cases. He is having to question what is happening within as he tries to ADApt to his new changes while learning to maintain composure while doing what he must.
“Law and Order: SVU” will bring another intense moment showcasing not just their cases but that these people are also human dealing with human things and these types of emotional issues do affect daily life for those in the law and in policing as these stories continue to impact viewers by pushing into dark realities.
