The Netflix series Kaos puts a heavy focus on Jeff Goldblum's Zeus and his obsession with his watch. It's more than just a trivial object; this small item turns out to be important! It has hidden meaning and drives the Kaos narrative.
Early in the Kaos premiere episode, we learn about the source of Zeus's prized watch: it was a gift from his son, Dionysus. Zeus values this watch greatly and refuses to replace it even when his son, Dionysus, offers him a new watch! Zeus sees it as a symbol of luck or a "lucky talisman". But, it soon vanishes.
When the watch disappears, Zeus loses his mind! He cares about this watch a lot, and it makes him react irrationally. He gets angry, and even starts taking out his frustration on his servants! Ironically, his insistence on valuing human possessions - especially the watch - is one of the points of contention with the other gods at the end of Kaos.
In Kaos, Zeus is consumed with trying to avoid the prophecy that awaits him, including his immortality slowly fading away! The fact that he received this watch from Hercules makes it even more powerful for him, and he relies on its power for luck and to help him escape his prophecy. This leads to many twists and turns that influence how his prophecy comes into fruition.
When Dionysus helps Orpheus retrieve Riddy from the Underworld, it’s seen as an act of defiance to Zeus’s rule. Zeus’s reaction and his loss of faith in his own son only worsens the situation. His obsession with this watch (a symbol of a more human world) also doesn't help the situation! It might ultimately end with his downfall.
